Alex....you bolt a fixture onto the end of the ends of the reversed eye spring that will allow the spreader ends a contact point to "bite" into.

I was lucky enough to come across a signed, numbered set of the Fordiana books by Lorin Sorensen a couple of years ago. Some great reading and period photos.

I had a cast c-clamp break on me recently. (have now purchased two old / forged clamps) I like to wrap a length of chain around the spring as well, for extra security.

I've been running 12 volts through a 6 volt solenoid for over a year......no issues yet. Randy Rundle from Fifth Ave. Auto, who wrote a book on the 12 volt conversion, said it wouldn't be an issue....

The shoulder is correct. Also make sure the bolts don't "bottom out" in the flywheel.
