Re: First (second really) 5 main aluminum block.

Fabulous work! I’d love to be a fly on the wall in your shop as I’ve always been fascinated by pattern making

Re: Mutant B Carb

Allis Chalmers used these carburetors on their early model WC tractors. They had a slightly smaller venturi and did not have the GAV or high speed enrichment circuits that the Ford B used.

Re: Carburetor icing?

Upside down?? Not this boy!! Gravity is your friend with an A! (gotta keep oil in the dipper tray somehow!!) Mr. Pietenpol wrote that the A carb was fine in the air as long as you kept it warm, but...

Re: Carburetor icing?

Kind of off topic, but maybe someone here will find it interesting: If the carburetor and intake manifold is separated from the exhaust manifold by much distance for some reason (like a Pietenpol...

Re: Need combustion chamber volume's

I thought about posting the mathematical answer that Eystein posted, but took the lazy way out after going through the math. The only thing I would like to add to that post is that the head gasket...

Re: Need combustion chamber volume's

A lot depends on how much your pistons hang out above the block, as well as the bore (oversize) of your block, but a combustion chamber volume of about 150cc's should get you close to 6:1.

Re: l pump modification

Vertically. Making the intake wider will reduce flow due to increased leakage around the gears.

Re: Timing gear backlash

I'm working on assembling an engine now, and I just checked mine from the side with a dial indicator as Patrick suggested, although I checked it every 90 degrees at the crankshaft for two turns. ...

Re: Modern Valve Guides

Thanks! The only spec I could find from a Ford source was in the Model T service manual which specified something ridiculously low like 24-28 lbs when compressed to "valve closed" height. Even...

Re: Modern Valve Guides

Ron: I'm sure that performance and reliability would be affected by less spring tension. I've seen lots of numbers thrown around for seat pressure, but I haven't seen or heard anything about what...

Re: Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

Chris:

Thanks for posting. What you say makes quite a bit of sense, and I feel that you have revealed something that I was holding out on! Before setting the crank up on V blocks, I tried...

Re: Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

Herm: Thanks for the tip. I will check with them.

George: I thought about that too, but what concerns me is that the oil clearance should be less than half of what I have for runout at the...

Re: Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

I'm beginning to think that poor crankshaft grinding jobs are the real reason that poured babbitt bearings have gotten a bad name in recent years... This engine is going to end up on the custom side...

Re: Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

Brent:

I haven't asked them about it yet, as I wanted to have a spec in hand before calling them. I am also doubtful that it can be straightened to run correctly. It looks like I'm probably going...

Re: Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

Kevin:

Thanks for your help, I'll have to get a copy of that book! I was so distraught over the center main "jumping rope" that I didn't check the flange runout. At this point, it's kind of moot,...

Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

I've been working on getting parts together to build up an A engine, and I have a crank that has been ground .010 undersize on all journals, and a block with fresh babbitt to match. Things seemed a...
