Re: Rear pinion bearing question

I had a similar issue. The temperature as measured by Fluke IR meter was about 152 F. I talked with a professional rebuilder and he saw no issue with this on a newly rebuilt rear end.

I check a...

Re: Hammering engine noise - what could it be?

We did not know what the problem was until we pulled the engine. The loud thumping sounded like it was coming from the middle of the engine. We thought it was a whole lot worst than it was.

Re: Hammering engine noise - what could it be?

We had a choice of the engine or the transmission plus rear end. We chose engine. Both are a PITA.

Re: Hammering engine noise - what could it be?

Another place to look is in the flywheel area. We experience this when a alignment pin fell out on the flywheel.

Re: B head or Lion III head?

I installed a Lion head with breathing improved by Piranio's. It replaced a Thomas head. Performance improvement was impressive as compared to the Thomas. Zero to 50 acceleration was reduced by 1...

Re: head torque

Be careful of the 2 head studs on the water outlet. The Thomas head is a bit thick and sometimes the studs do not have many threads in the block.

Re: Odd idle issue

When you open the idle screw, I think you are adjusting the air flow at idle not the fuel flow.

Re: 16" wheels on my '28?

Most Great Race rally cars run with a very accurate speedometer which you calibrate over a 10 mile or so course daily. It uses a magnetic pickup on a front wheel. I have experience doing this with...

Re: 12V horn on 6V system, WORK???

It will pull twice the amps. I suspect it will burn up if it honks.

Re: High oil pressure

Are you able to run with 50% antifreeze?

I have a similar set up with the smaller pulley. My speedster overheats with 50% antifreeze. Radiator etc is clean.

Evidently the head casting has...

Re: High oil pressure

I see that you are using a Lion head. Do you have the standard crank pulley? Or have you moved to the smaller diameter Riley billet pulley?

Re: High oil pressure

I installed a Dan-4-Banger oil pump on my B engine. It runs at 60 psi cold and then drops down to 38-40 when warm. It has a Butz rear seal and a modern front seal. There are NO leaks. I would...

Re: oil pressure

I think Jim is right about the modifications. My engine has a Dan 4 Banger oil pump. It puts up 75-80 psi cold and then settles out at 38-40 at run temperature. We have a full filter set up and...

Re: Tappets What do you prefer?

I like the single nut tappets BUT a word of caution. I had an issue with my set. The nuts should be hard to move. Two of the ones on my car became loose and moved. One opened up to .050. ...

Re: New cast iron brake drum rubs on shoes

I found a similar problem. I had to take off .020 from the new drum. It was not quite true (round). It appears that the new brake linings are thicker or the drum has a high spot.
