The 1939 to 1948 Ford and Mercury Shop Manual page 261 states backlash should be checked on the splines of the pinion shaft. Never greater than 0.008” and more than 0.003”. At 0.005” you are golden...

Wanted 1939 ford drivers side axle half
Looking to build Columbia rear not using original drivers side axle half. Almost anywhere east coast within range. Complete 1939 ford rear end also acceptable.

For those who have installed several banjo rear axles, is it easier to remove the entire rear and torque tube as a unit. Then disassemble rather then working under the car. Is it a lot more work...

First impression from personal experience, yes but it will not be easy work. Model T experience would be very helpful(crank to start). A 40 should have the crankshaft adapter for a crank/lug nut...
