Re: New engine
Ron, do you have any pictures of a head with bronze fill in the exhaust transfer area? That's interesting.

Re: Spindle pin bore
Nice fix,Lawrie. You can tell a guy's run a lathe before when he uses a four jaw chuck. :)

Re: Evening Drive in the Merc
Nice drive and crop tour,Ralph. Wish we had some of your 60F temps here today...it's 102F with high humidity. Winter wheat harvest has started here in KS so lots of grain moving.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Maybe to use late heads on an early block...I can't remember all the details but I think that's it. If you have an early block handy see if that hole overhangs the deck.

Re: ‘53 ran hot, then missing badly. Head gasket?
Exactly. No problem there. If it's a steady miss at idle, remove one plug wire at a time from the distributor cap. If one makes no difference, that is the cylinder misfiring. From there you check the...

Re: New versus old valve springs
It does sound as if you have the late "rotator" type springs but the early retainers. The early springs are longer and will fix your mismatch. That's the way I'd go.

Re: 80 years ago today
We owe those allies a lot. Everything, in fact. We should all do our best to make sure our young people don't forget-starting with our own families.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Nice pics. Standing on the front is classic! One thing different when I put the later engine in the '41...the carb mount pad on the manifold is at a different angle than the early engine's and the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Well, you got me. The belt is routed down around that idler (cut down from an idler on a John Deere 4 cyl) which mounts to a threaded hole in the slingshot bracket. The alternator is cheated forward...

Re: Rear end squealing/whining
If it never makes the noise unless the truck is moving it's not the clutch throwout bearing.
If you can't run the truck on stands with wheels spinning I don't know how you'll isolate the noise...

Re: 1940 V8 Cam / valve timing
You actually did a very good job. The lash mistake is an honest one, and is not uncommon especially if someone doesn't do this for a living. Making your own timing tape and using a damper you have on...

Re: chevy dizzy for flatheads
If you use a carburetor other than the stock unit, the vacuum source for the Ford distributor will not be correct and the timing curve will be wrong. Also, the Ford distributor used ONLY vacuum to...
