Re: Timing advance plate - Crab Distributor
I think that is what it is supposed to be . . . but I always have a TDC marker and an adjustable timing light to know what I'm really getting. I don't trust the distributor, the slot in the cam or...

Re: 8Ba with Big Cam idle/hg
Looks like you should have about 25 degrees total advance - all in early. That part is good, though as FlatJack noted, you could lower the mechanical and add some initial timing. The max you want...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Lucky Charms and Captain Crunch . . . my childhood favorites.
And if you got really greedy (on a new box of Lucky Charms) - you got up on the weekend before your brothers and cherry-picked a...

Re: Crane 400 Cam and a AL-1 cam
Interesting Story on Harvey Crane: Most of us remember the "cam wars" and it is easy to have the impression that guys like Harvey Crane and Ed Iskenderian must have had little respect for each...

Re: Crane 400 Cam and a AL-1 cam
I used to run a cam that Tom Hutchinson called the "Awful Awful". It was a .450 lift flat tappet grind that Erson once made. Somehow I "lost" the damn thing over the years - have looked for it many...

Re: Head bolt/stud sealant
Hey Rock . . . checked that 'Leak Lock' stuff out . . . looks like a great product for an application like this - ordered a 4 - Oz jar of it. Will report back the next time I use it.
Thanks for...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
It has been a fun journey for us all . . . now the REAL fun happens when you start it for the first time.
To me, starting a new engine is one of the best hotrod experiences --> a combination...

Re: One Head stud too short each bank follow-up
It will be a fine engine - you know what you're doing!
Given the type of studs you're using, definitely put it through a couple heat cycles and retorque the heads a couple times.
Also, you...

Re: Isky 3/4 Max 1 Camshaft
Yep . . . but I don't envy Ryan having to make the calls and I give him credit for being consistent and not blowing in the wind.
With that said, all of us will miss Pete and the extensive...

Re: 13/4 intake
Come on Tony . . . bring the ole' girl back to life! Now, with a bigger cam in it (like a .500+ lift roller), it could be something.
But, you'll have to bore out the first two cam bearing...

Re: One Head stud too short each bank follow-up
I was laughing this AM at the title of this thread ---> kind of a way of mentioning a friend who isn't the "brightest bulb in the pack":
"I know Ole Tom . . he is one head stud too short. . . ."...

Re: Isky 3/4 Max 1 Camshaft
Pete posted some remarks that got him banned. The rules are the rules and they're here for the benefit of all. I eMailed Pete and let him know that he is missed - he is fine and is still on the HAMB...

Re: Oil Pump?
Nothing like some real-world examples . . . as I remember the conversation with Adam. Nice to see that the "big pump band-aid" trick has worked for him. Worth a try at the very least . . .

Re: O2 bung question
It can go anyplace downstream of the engine - usually a couple feet back from the block or head. On a flathead, your "ports" are already like headers, so I put mine back from where the rear port...

Re: 13/4 intake
This is usually how it is done with full-on race engines - pull the hard seats out and grind the seats right in the cast iron. There is no issue with this and it gets rid of the challenge of putting...

Re: Overheating 1946 V8
The 'Old Wive's Tales' about restricting flow so the "water picks up more of the heat" are just that - don't believe them. Flow is your friend - period. If you're ever bored - here is a link to...
