I’m not familiar with what Shoebox Central sells for battery cables, but they all need to be 00.
For the 6v Optima, your only option is the 6v Redtop. They really are by far the best 6v battery.

I'd check the battery and starter cables also. I just replaced mine through batterycablesusa.com with 00 gauge cables. With the 6v optima, it cranks strong hot or cold.

The leak from the top is probably from the rubber gasket that came with the filter. I found the Wix 51006 has the right size gasket.

I had the same experience as Bruce two years ago in the Chicago area. The flathead machinist I was using could not guarantee the repair would hold up. I ended up finding a better block.
