Re: grill

Don't get me wrong, I kind of like the look, especially on a car that's been "nosed and decked". It's "clean" looking. I'm just sayin' that if you do find one (they are out there), and you like the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I make sure my heads are flat and surfaced properly and only use grease when I install them. I've never had a problem, and you can re-use the gaskets if necessary.

I'm a cheapskate, and a set of...

Re: grill

They used to be a common item (JC Whitney, etc.) If you look, hard enough, you might be able to find one. If you do find one, install it and enjoy it for about 6 months, when it will start to rust.

Re: ‘53 ran hot, then missing badly. Head gasket?

We had a long thread on here several years ago about the proper spark plugs to use with older Offenhauser heads. I believe the consensus was that nothing available was correct; 1/2" reach plugs were...

Re: 59A Flathead Running Rich, Need Help

I would suggest a plug change ASAP. Not only will the plugs be shrouded, but the shorter threads have a good chance of failing, as aluminum is not as strong as cast iron. There is a reason they went...

Re: 59A Flathead Running Rich, Need Help

What plugs are you currently running? I don't know about the 59A Edmunds heads, but the 8BA versions take a 3/4" reach plug (Champion "L" series or equivalent). The stock plugs are much shorter reach...

Re: The restoration - 1935 Ford model 51, 1-1/2 ton farm truck

I'd really like to have that, but where would I keep it?

Re: Lowering shackles source

I'll play "Devil's Advocate" here for a bit. I have never had a spring "de-arched" myself, but wouldn't "de-arching" it to any significant extant make it longer between the eyes and cause...

Re: 1932 Ford Mid Point version door handles and

I have had mixed success with "pot metal welding rods ("Muggy Weld", etc.). I had great success repairing a headlight bezel on my '68 Corvette, but less on other stuff. I think it depends upon how...

Re: Exhaust cross-over pipe mystery insert

I believe that's called a "Duck Bill" heat riser valve.

If I'm wrong, I'll blame it on the fuzzy picture.:D

Re: 80 years ago today

Unfortunately, a lot of these historic events are getting further and further into the past and thus becoming less relevant to the current generations.

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

This discussion is kinda off the point as the post-48 Ford products no longer used that type of resistor.

Re: Front Axle 1939 Ford pickup

It might be the angle of the picture, but that tire seems to be turned way to much for me.

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

I saw a "Yellow Top" ad the other day. It offers a battery that looks just like a "Red Top" except that it's yellow for $138! Does anyone have any information on these? Sounds too good to be true!

Re: 1950 Mercury add factory OD

I don't know if I agree with this. You still end up with a 1:1 final drive, which is counter to the purpose of adding an overdrive.

Re: 1950 Mercury add factory OD

And the relay on the firewall and the lockout cable and the kickdown switch and the wiring harness. Thankfully, all are (or used to be) available but it can get expensive.

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

What kind of battery is in it and how old is it?

A long time ago, the only battery I could find in a pinch was a Group 1 (made for Plymouths, Chevrolets, Studebakers, and various tractors). It was...

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

You said : "It also cranks slower while trying to hot start vs being cold."

This indicates that here is a voltage drop somewhere in the system. This means there is also lower voltage to the coil...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I use a device called a "Rota-Broach" on Mercury 4 bolt manifolds to enlarge the bore from 1 3/8" to 1 7/16" for using the Rochester 2G carburetors. I have a jig to mount the manifold on my drill...

Re: 4 Barrel Carb?

Fellows, please note that "square" (3-7/8"x 3-3/4) and "square bore" (5.625 x 5.160) patterns are different, with early WCFB's, early 4G's, Stromberg's, and FOMOCO "tower of power" fitting the...

Re: 4 Barrel Carb?

I'm sure the early Buick WCFB is a great carb. The problem is finding one. Same with the early Buick Stromberg 4 BBLS and the famous FOMOCO "tower of Power". I grab every older "square" carburetor I...

Re: 4 Barrel Carb?

I was under the impression that all of the flathead manifold use the old "square" mounting pattern. This was what was used on the early WCFB's and the pre-56 Rochester 4G's. You may have a later...

Re: part number for 1950 exhaust headers

That's what I get for believing Speedway's ads. They say they are genuine Fenton's. I'll bet you can make 'em fit though.

I really believe in them; I installed them in 1987, and when I...

Re: part number for 1950 exhaust headers

What are you looking for? Ford made a driver side manifold for police use that provided for a dual exhaust. They weren't really headers just one specialized manifold. I don't know the part number,...
