Re: 2024 EFV-8 Central National Meet Auburn Indiana

My friend and I are about to head north-northeast toward Auburn. I'm really looking forward to this.

Anyone who still thinks 37s are ugly ducklings after seeing this car needs to have their eyes...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

My experience matches Mart's, I have better luck with original steel needles over the viton tipped ones.

For future reference these carburetors use standard Holley main jets available from lots...

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator. Is there such a thing.

I have taken the armature and case from a 56-64 Ford 12V generator and combined them with the pulley, front plate, and through bolts from a flathead generator. The only trick I remember was the late...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I lived with a series of crappy clutches in my 53 sedan for years. When I finally got one in there that worked it was so much better I wondered how I had put up with the bad clutches for so long. A...

Re: New engine

Anywhere from slightly less than 5:1 on a stock 32 engine up to slightly more than 7:1 on a stock 53 engine. Typically between 6 and 7 to 1.

The best commonly available stock Ford heads with...

Re: Stop Lights 1940 Ford

The stop lights are only controlled by the brake light switch and should come on even if the ignition is off.
The tail lights are controlled by the head light switch.
From your description it...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Great news on the head. You're closing in on having everything together and running. This is getting exciting. Fingers crossed the clutch disk works for you and assembly continues.

Re: Air/Fuel Meter/gauge

For several years I have had an Innovate 02 sensor in one of their exhaust clamps (https://www.innovatemotorsports.com/o2-sensor-exhaust-clamp.html) and the extension wiring to go from the back of a...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

8BA era engines have a timing mark on the crank pulley and a pointer on the timing cover, no need to add a TDC mark. My memory is the factory mark is 4 degrees before TDC and is where the factory...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I used to use copper coat on both sides of all head gaskets. Over the years I kept talking to friends that use grease instead with no problems. I would try what tubman suggests.

Use a thin film...

Re: ‘53 ran hot, then missing badly. Head gasket?

I agree the compression is not the problem. The numbers look a little low to me, I am used to seeing 100 to 110 on a stock EAB, but I live near sea level which affects things a bit.

You may have...

Re: 2024 EFV-8 Central National Meet Auburn Indiana

I got almost all the pre-trip maintenance done on the 53: oil changed, remainder of fluids checked, valve lash checked, different carburetor rebuilt & jeting verified ok, horns installed, brakes...

Re: New versus old valve springs

The kit must have had the wrong springs in it since it also came with the valves, retainers, and locks. I would check if there is anyone else in the area with decent used springs to save you the cost...

Re: Exhaust cross-over pipe mystery insert

The older I get the more I realize the original Ford engineers knew a thing or two about making flathead V8 powered cars. An original flathead era Ford in top shape is a wonderful driving machine.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

That plate should do the truck nicely.

I did a bit of wandering around the internet looking for clutch disk information and the most helpful bit I found was a post on the HAMB:...

Re: 1950 Mercury add factory OD

Re: Exhaust cross-over pipe mystery insert

If you are running good thermostats I suspect you will see no difference in temperatures. JWL was performing dyno tests of an 8BA and found one of these stuck closed in the crossover pipe after...

Re: New versus old valve springs

Why purchase new springs? Finish testing your longer old ones and if all are within spec use them.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Are you going to add bolt in braces that go from your new crossmember to the factory crossmember? I think that would be more than enough triangulation for the master cylinder and clutch assembly....

Re: Gear lube

If the 47 three speed is in the pickup pictured as your avatar, they were open drive from the factory. I don't have a good answer for the grease, but wouldn't worry about it if everything is working...

Re: 2024 EFV-8 Central National Meet Auburn Indiana

I have a parts request for anyone heading to the Central National in Auburn. If you have a spare 52-53-54 passenger car six cylinder oil bath air cleaner I have a friend who would love to buy it from...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I didn't take measurements, but it will be more than 1/16 inch. The 1 1/16 is the venturi size, the base is larger diameter. The two things that worry me about boring out to the larger base diameter...

Re: Hand Opersted Tachometer ??

Hand operated tachometer was used in equipment repair and testing. You held a friction end against a shaft to see how fast it was running.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Have you seen anyone port a stock iron Ford intake? Is there enough wall to go that big before getting into the exhaust crossover?

Re: What weight oil should I use - Brand?

You have the correct fitting, it is the one the oil pressure sending unit is threaded into.
Your engine appears to be assembled out of several sources. Your car left the factory with a tangerine...
