I think you could use the .010 rings and gap as needed. As for the knocking, check the play in your timing gears. If the mesh is not to spec they will hammer and sound like loose rods. I know this...

Are you confident in your measurements? The pistons would be very loose in the cylinders with these measurements.

There is probably wear in the hub taper, not an axle problem.

When you tighten up the pressure plate do the release fingers come close to the center of clutch disc not allowing much travel for clutch to release when stepping on pedal? If the disc is too thick...

The original bolts were a snug fit in the block. You would tighten up the nut, after positioning the cotter pin hole in the bolt for best installation. This snugness is what centers the main cap on...

I agree. Not to pile on here but if the car is positive ground your first connection of ground clamp to head bolt was reverse polarity and electronics usually if not always turn up their toes on that...
