Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe The new latch on my 40 coupe has to be locked to remove the key. I don't recall this on my previous 40's, and it is not so on my 46. Is this correct?

Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe I have a drake,it has to be locked to get key out.

Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe I wondered about that, because my Drake has to be locked to get the key out where the original didn't have to be.

Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe I solved the key problem by cutting the head of the key so it fits under the key cover on the handle. I just leave the key in the unlocked lock until I need to lock it, then remove the key. Drill a hole in the remaining key head so you can put it on your key ring.
My problem with the Drake handle is that it is no longer is attached to the base. The handle can be easily be separated from the base. In fact, I have to be careful that it doesn't come off while lifting the trunk lid. On the plus side, the chrome on my handle/base still looks good after 17+ years. |

Isn't the shaft threaded for a nut to retain it? It is on mine. So I guess the Drake lock is correct, not one of Fords better ideas, IMO. |

Most guys recommend against lifting the trunk by the handle.....they are only castings and break easily that way......you are bending the handle at the rotation point. I have an NOS Ford one on my '40.......do not need to lock it to remove the key.......been on there since 1980. |
Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe I got the head of my key off too. Works fine.

Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe Both my 1946 Lincoln Continental and my 1948 Lincoln Zephyr the key will not come out unless the latch is closed. I always thought this was on purpose so that you couldn't remove the key and lock it in the trunk. Definitely a better idea from Ford!

Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe I have an original lock/handle on my 40. The handle must be locked in order to remove the key.

Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe Don't know if mine is original, but it must also be locked to remove the key.

Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe My drake handle is threaded like oem, works just fine.

Re: Drake deck lid latch for 40 coupe So,the difference must be in the key cylinder from the original to the Drake not allowing you to remove the key unless it's locked.
