Reality check with parts: Flywheels: Keep or scrap?

I took some time this afternoon and cleaned out the garage. I had enough junk that I brought a few things (old car related and old electronics) to the scrap yard. The load was worth the trip.

While cleaning up, I ran across some 8BA flywheels I have. My buddy and I also recently picked up about another 10-15 that are a mix of 59AB's and 8BA's.

Most are really clean and have good ring gears and could easily be surfaced. Some do not and I'd assume they would be scrap.

So my question is, is there a demand for used flywheels?

Due to weight, I'd assume shipping would kill a sale, so I was thinking of bringing them out to Hershey with if the buyer gives a verbal commitment to buy one after seeing pictures.

As you know, these things are heavy. 5 flywheels in a crate is a back breaker. I'd rather not keep moving them around, but if guy could use them then I'd be willing to bring them out to a swap so they get another life.

I welcome any thoughts. Thanks,

I have attempted to sell flywheels that were professionally ground and ready to install. Got to the point I'd offered them free for shipping costs.
They ended up at the recyclers.

Remove the ring gears from the worst condition flywheels. scrap the flywheels without ring gears. Stack the rest under the bench for the day that you, or someone else may need one.

I was expecting someone to say this. Ugh. Curious what guys do? I've found a fair number of engines without flywheels attached to them.

Do folks buy new ones?

I'm keeping one good spare that fits my truck, and sold or scrapped the rest. I sold a couple as part of a "take it all" sale to local guy who I suspect is a parts hoarder.

I'm sure I'll never need the spare, not like they really wear out.

also, they make a great base for a grinder...I've seen several used for this.

I was just about to post that. I have a no good one at the base of one of my grinder stand. As stable as can be.

It is a sad state we are living in, heavy items can not even be given away. I have several blocks missing the flywheel, but not on a priority list now. I also have a bunch of 11" wheels I'll never use. I find the 10" are harder to find, fo me anyway. I prefer the 9", but still too heavy to ship

We sell one every so often but not enough to justify keeping a supply on the shelf. We generally just pull one and have it resurfaced as we get an order for it. I see them at the auctions all the time….rare for us to consider bidding on any. Certain new flywheels are available in the aftermarket, so saving piles of old originals just isn’t worth it. Now, if you’ve got the space and hate to throw anything away, the hobby will be grateful to you….at the estate sale.

If I wasn't going to be cremated, I would have my coffin lined with my flywheels to get a last laugh at my friends who would be paul bearers!!

I wouldn't mind having a 11 truck flywheel to go with a spare 1935-36 short block which I'm keeping as a spare or backup engine for my 1935 Truck. It might be something I never need, but if it was free, I'm interested. I go to Hershey every year so that's one way to minimize the transportation headache. Send me a PM if you have one you are wiling to donate.

I hate to see old Ford parts thrown away and have been clearing my garage of stuff I'll never use. I give it all away for free except for the shipping. Just gave away 4 carbs. More parts are coming. I'll list the parts on the Swap page.

stop and think how many engines we tossed 40 years ago now we try everything to salvage them so for me throw some rust stop of some sort on them and hide them under the bench [$2 yesterday $20 next year ]

Re: Reality check with parts: Flywheels: Keep or scrap?

I sort of feel like all the flywheels, 3 3/4" cranks, the six volt generators and stock cylinder heads and manifolds, both intake and exhaust I have squirreled away will never get used by anybody. The few young guys that like our flatheads don't do stock restorations much anymore. I have sold a couple of trucks to guys in their 30s but they like a 12 v system and some other modern upgrades. There is flathead love in the 'Race of Gentlemen' crowd, but they like 'em warmed up with the speed goodies.
