The old standby Greyhound. Just refused a package- "We no longer ship freight" ?? HUH?? After 100yrs Greyhound has pooped out? I noticed that the freight offices were closing or selling to an independent operator, but that was how bicycle ect. always shipped. Newc

Would love to know who you used? I have a nephew in College who uses a bike to get around everywhere - but then there are Summer breaks, then back in the Fall, etc.. Also if you don't mind sharing - example costs?

I’ve used Bike Flights a few times for oversized items and have been happy with service and cost.

Used to ship a lot of bikes bec I used to restore Schwinns. Shipped a ‘62 Superior last in 2021. I always used my local bike shop to box and handle. Boxing, shipping, insurance. I let handle that hassle. Never had an issue. Some of the bikes were stupid expensive restos.

I just sent out 2 wide5 truck wheels today. Ebay set the shipping cost at 97.40. PO said 181.25. difference of 83.85 ! I told the buyer I would split the difference, but....we'll see if that happens. I'm about done shipping big items. have an auction and take the loss.

I've got a 100 dollar flahead bell housing for sale. 37.7 pounds. Box is 16x19x12. Had someone interested in Ohio. Shipping was more than the part. $101 and change FedEx and $104 and change UPS. I suggested pirateship.com but he wasn't interested. Needles to say the bell housing is still boxed up with no where to go.

I’ve been pricing a repro front fender for an off-topic, late model pickup......$99 for the fender and $150 to ship it.....makes me nuts!.........Mark

On July 9, 2023, the USPS is again raising their rates.

If you and the destination are within Forward Air service areas, they have really good rates.

I would think that this is an unfortunate name choice.

Well Denny, going on a pirate ship I would think it would be well protected.

When you add insurance - Pirate is actually more expensive.

Re: Bad news gets worse-SHIPPING !!

Pair of 32 Front fenders from Ohio to Nebraska est 500.00. For many years my truck line of choice was Conway because they didn't interline so if there was damage I knew where to go.(never collected a damage claim) They merged with XPO who I shipped with a number of years average cost 6-800 dollars. Now the cost to ship a pallet ed 32 frame is $1500-2000.00 After using the same rate class for about 35 years they raised the class to the max allowable and took away my discount. One thing trucking companies really don't want to service a small operation like mine. I'm glad I decided to retire from the chassis business. When I started the T5 business in the mid 90's I could ship a kit about anywhere for $15 now it's at least $40

Last year, I bought three BW T89 transmissions (T85's with OD, that came in early sixties Ford pickups) from a guy just north of Oklahoma City. After checking shipping costs, I made a detour on my way back to Minnesota rom Florida and went to pick them up myself. It wasn't a bad trip, and I got to spend some quality time with a guy from the H.A.M.B.

Might be an "unfortunate" name as you see it, but they saved me a sale when I was able to quote a shipping price through PirateShip.com (via UPS) that was less than 50% of the price UPS quoted me online.
I use them every time I ship a package now.

times are a changing. we all need to adjust................

car swapping aint what it used to be. we all need to hoard more parts.......lol

deuce_roadster 05-14-2023 08:23 AM

Re: Bad news gets worse-SHIPPING !!

An unfortunate result of the price gouging by the shippers is that the extra parts we have including hoards, after we pass will go to a scrap yard or dealer. I have witnessed this twice now. Heirs rarely want anything to do with old car parts and selling them and shipping is just too big of a hassle.

I went to a car swap meet this past Saturday--average of those walking around 0ver 60 years or older--sold parts cheap just to move them on and still had few takers. I will assume the younger crowd-under 30 will be trying to find parts for the i phones on the internet
