35 spoke rim run out

How much runout is allowed before it becomes a problem,my 35 is just not giving a smooth ride, radials helped a lot but still not very smooth,,
I don’t have the spacers between the hub and rim but in the process of making some ..should this help some?? Also have had wheels balanced on modern machine, but not much improvement over bubble balancer, what about the beads??
Do you leave the weights on if using beads?

Re: 35 spoke rim run out

Without those spacers your wheels will be flexing, ultimately failing through cracked lug holes. I'd fit them first, go from there.
And no, no need for the weights if using beads

I sell and use the spacer plates for 32-35 wires made by MT/Boling Bros. $20.00 each, $18.00 with the 10% discount I offer.

Just buy MT/ Boling ones, they are made really nice. And they are nice people too.

You should have been able to see any runout on the tire balancer.
How much weight did each wheel take? A lot of weights usually means something is not right. There are some bad repro vintage tires with excessive runout. I just had a friend send one back.

You can lower the tire pressure. The maximum pressure on the tire is not the recommended pressure. Its the maximum weight the tire can support at that pressure. If you look at new cars the recommended tire pressure on the door post will be lower than the maximum pressure on the tire. That's because the same tire is meant to go on a lot of different weight vehicles. Lower it to 28 psi and see if that improves the ride. Its hard for me to know what "smooth" means. Is it shaking going down the road or does it just ride harsh, is it wandering around...

Original '35 drums are the only hydraulic fitting drums Not needing spacers. Newc

Newc is on the right track, you never told us what drums you are using. If 35 on a 35, no spacer, just make sure nobody ground off the nubs that support the rims. To address the question, I've never seen a perfect wire wheel. an1/8 " run out is good, 3/16 put them on the back, more than that find a better wheel. They must be round, and check on the inside of the rim where the bead sits, not the outside edge

It is possible to straighten the wire wheels. Contact your local club and see if they know of anyone that can do it.

Have you checked the run out or are you just thinking it's that? Fairing easy to check with a homemade pointer placed next to the rim as it spins.

Re: 35 spoke rim run out

I had Merc centers put in some new rims by "Marsh Racing Tire" years ago (company long gone), they asked if I was going to use the wheels on dirt or asphalt. I told them it was a street car, they trued the wheels to 0.015" T.I.R., they did a terrific job. As an aside, I purchased over twenty five 1935 wire wheels to get four that would run at 0.015" T.I.R.

Re: 35 spoke rim run out

1st thing 1st spacers/ wieghts/ beads; if your rim us not true all your doing is putting a band aid over the problem[and they have a habit of falling of at the worst time] check your rims and make sure that your run out is mininal if any get that correct and you have 1/2 a hope

TIR is total indicator reading. Dial indicator reading on a surface for one revolution. My understanding. Could be wrong.

Re: 35 spoke rim run out

Don, if you can find a tire place that can balance the entire rotating assembly, all of the parts, tire, wheel, drum, hub, can be culprits.

Re: 35 spoke rim run out

yes ^^^ you can have them balanced on the car, so it does all parts

Tony has it correct, I should have included the explanation in my original message.

Orig '35 drums are mechanical brake drums and have the nubs for the wire wheel.Support rings are needed if mounting a 40 and later rim.

Re: 35 spoke rim run out

Did manage to get rear wheels removed and the hubs are orginal 35 with the nubs ,while on jack stands started up and did a run up,to check for wobble ,there were a little but not to bad, nothing extreme,
Got out the bubble balancer and instructions to check for balance ,I found out there’s a learning curve using this thing, took awhile but got one balanced ,,
I agree the spin balance would be best but hard to find anyone that uses them .
Will check fronts in a couple days,,

Re: 35 spoke rim run out

A backyard trick for the front is to back the brakes off so there is no drag, gravity is your friend. the heavy spot is always on the bottom. place your wheel weights on the rim till you get the wheel to stop in any position after a gentle spin. worked for me
