See above
38-48 will bolt in using your water pumps, fan, intake, distributor. 49-53 will work, mostly fan issues and rad hose hookup.
It all depends how much work your willing to do and what outcome you want.
Stock, custom, high performance, it's up to you.

Any 59a block would be a good fit, but so would other years.

looking for simple and stock.

looks like most will fit?

ronn:

Suggest you do a lot more research about the differences between the various flat head Ford engines BEFORE you do anything else. For instance: Installing a 60 HP engine would greatly under power your 41 and be a huge mistake.

You said "flathead and didn't specify how many cylinders. There are a lot of people who consider the "G" and "H" 6 cylinder engines to be superior to the V8's. Since the first 6 came in '41, they are also a possibility. Parts are more difficult to come by than the more popular V* models, however.

In the v8 85-100 engines the blocks are all the same within groups (such as the 59a series), everything else is a bolt on (heads, intake, front cover, water pumps, etc). Almost any of the blocks are a bolt in with the correct bolt-on parts.

Are you looking for a complete engine that is a bolt in? A short block that will work? A bare block to build up?

The original engine was most likely what is referred to as a "raised" intake surface block. There are very few years with that feature, mainly 41.

When you get into the V8-60 and the 6-cyl engines I think you would have transmission/bellhousing issues, maybe radiator issues.

Yes J, looking for a complete engine to just bolt in. so will stay away from the 60s and 6 cylinder then.

thank you all.

Re: flathead engine 1941

I would think any of the 59a engines (46-48) would be a fairly simple install. A 41 or war year engine would be a good option but probably not many of them out there.

Does anyone know what the oil pan variations are between the 41 cars and the later 59a car and/or pickup-truck engines?

I believe 3 engines were available for 1941, 4, 6, and v8.
Only year as far as I know.

I wouldn't put a 34 engine in a 41 vehicle for a lot of reasons, if that is what you are referring to.

yes and simply why?

Re: flathead engine 1941

They are a lot more expensive to rebuild, because of the babbit main bearings and different rod bearings also the water pumps are in the head so, it complicates the installation.

They have value as an original engine in the early bodies, but would be a problem in a later body, like a 41. Parts are more difficult to come by, rebuild cost are higher and nothing would really fit correctly (heads, intake manifold, water pumps, motor mounts, distributor, cut-out generator vs voltage regulator, fan location and type, etc). It would take a lot of work/exchanging parts to get one in a 1941 and on top of everything else, it would devalue the 41 as far as resell would go. And it would decrease performance. Can not think of any positives even if the engine was in good condition and free!

Re: flathead engine 1941

I bought a 41 convertible about three months ago and a 41 woody about a month ago- for no apparent reason on the year.

both have the trans and no motor, so yes want to bolt in complete engines for ease
and wont be putting crazy mileage on them, so just decent running engines. dont know much about flatheads, but you guys are teaching me.
mostly have messed with model A's.
