Flathead builders in Texas?
 

I am wondering if anybody out there knows of a respected flathead rebuilder in texas? I have only come across one, a place called Lost in the fifties, in Canton, TX. Surely there is more than one flathead rebuilder out here in the big state of texas, if not, maybe I should get into that business...:rolleyes: I am wanting to rebuild my late grandpas 52 flathead..I am going to try some of the rebuild myself but may need someone else to do it for me...Any help would be much appreciated...

Thanks redhorse1947,much appreciated. I will check these guys out. I really want to do most of the rebuild myself along with my son, but i won't be able to any of the intricate machine work involved. Sounds like Texas needs some flathead speacialists in the state to help out all of us flathead fans...New hobby/career in my near future maybe?? Thanks alot man....

Are you a member of the local EFV-8 Chapter? You might consider approaching them to find resources. Also, Pate is coming up in a month, should be able to get some names from there. I don't do the machine work, but I have a shop I trust here in San Antonio. Then, I assemble my engines modifying them for 95% oil filtration and drilling the bosses for the Johnson lifters. But, I'm too far away.

36tbird, no I'm not a member of that group,I'll look into them as well. Yeah I've been doing a lot of research and reading (2-3 yrs) on the rebuild of the flathead.The old flatheads definetely need a full flow oil system and the lifter bosses drilled so you don't beat up your knucles adjusting the lifters.I believe it's within my skill level,just a matter of doing things correctly and maticulously. Thanks for the insite...Any more info would be helpful.

I go mine done at Coyote Flatheads in Alamogordo, NM, its about one hour from El Paso TX.

I'm also curious about machine work on flatheads inTexas too. I have read that the blocks need to be acid dipped and am having trouble finding anybody that still does it. The enviromentalist crowd has made shops move toward bead blasting & "cooking" blocks. I'm not sure that these methods are as good for really cleaning up the water courses.

I found this one guy in Canton Tx, east of the DFW metroplex, called
Lost in the Fifties. He was mentioned in a rebuild book of mine to be a good flathead engine rebuilder.I'm gonna check him out.I'm seriously starting to consider opening up my own flathead tuning/rebuild shop, all it will take is some dedication,research and learning everything possible about the flathead. After all,the old flathead is a straight forward & basic motor. Anyone out there close to the Ft.Worth area with the same interest as mine about starting a new flathead speed/tunung/rebuild shop just let me know,we'll start it "ROOTS" style,simple & small...This is America,land of opurtunity
