1937 - changing gear advice Hey guys,
So I'm pretty sure this is the last bit of information that I am after on this new old car (V8 60). New clutch thats set up really well. All gear selections work well (double clutching) asides changing from hi back to second. Any tricks? Or a transmission re build? D.:D |
Re: 1937 - changing gear advice Sound like a rebuild is in order, should not have to double clutch up or down shifting. 60HP transmission parts should be fairly easy to find and much less expensive than 85HP. Sounds like the blocker hub and outer sleeve. Drain the transmission and look for any brass in the drain plug.

Re: 1937 - changing gear advice You should not have to double clutch this transmission with the exception of downshifting from 2nd gear into first. It sounds to me like your syncros may be worn out. There are others here that know far more than me about transmissions and can go into more specifics. If you need parts for it go to the website for Mac Vanpelt. His business is VanPelt sales.

Re: 1937 - changing gear advice Quote:
There is no repair book that is specific to the V8-60 transmissions. My book ("Ins and Outs of Early Ford Transmissions") comes the closest. This transmission is very similar to the 1936-38 types that Ford used on the 85hp models. Early type synchro. The 1937 sixty hp trans would have come with the straight cut gears for low and reverse, whereas the 38-39 versions had all-helical gears. So, most of the assembly procedures are the same as the bigger transmission, and that is all covered in my book. Grinding going back into second gear can be the clutch adjustment as you pointed out, so we will move on from that. You should also check the pilot bearing in the flywheel to make sure it's not binding on the trans input shaft. Aside from that, it sounds like the synchro assembly is not doing its job correctly. We have new (NOS) synchro inner hubs and NOS outer sleeves. I don't know what else to look at or suggest since we don't have the unit in our shop to inspect. The inner hub has the two brass rings (which look like they are (segmented"). You'll have to disassembly the unit to see this, but perhaps the rear ring (for 2nd gear) is broken or loose within the hub mounting. The rings are not sold separately....you have to buy the complete inner hub. Will be expensive but necessary to ship these parts to Australia. D. |
Re: 1937 - changing gear advice I have a 1937 NOS, 60hp transmission cluster gear. If you need one.
