8BA Distributor

I know there is someone on here that provides dependable 8ba distributors. Who is it ? I'm in need of one.

Have a brand new 8ba motor. only mods are merc crank and cam. runs funny when holding a steady speed above about 50mph and cackles out the exaust when you let off the gas. The only thing i have not replaced is the distributor.

bill,
For the money you can not beat a converted small block Chevy dist in
an 8ba. Bubba, and Charlie ny and no lots of others sell them.
Better get look at your plugs...you could be running lean. Perhaps too much
advance too. Don't risk frying a piston .

bILLS1020,

I guess there are a couple options here ( maybe more)
1- Build you a stock vacuum only 8ba distributor with all new stuff and send it to you. Only need to know what front cover you have aluminum or cast iron..... $100
2- Ship you one of our full mechanical advance units that comes with new cap and rotor. ( we have shipped 675 of these and they work great) ....$ 180.

Yes they do and i built Richards distributor to his specs using a vacuum advance unit as well as mechanical advance.
The additional vac advance with the mechanical advance complement each other and add additional mpg.
HOWEVER i have found that many guys use high lift cams and dual carbs making the vac part pretty hard to tune.
All our chevrolet conversions have all the right parts to add vacuum advance and we will always add a accell adjustable unit for $40 bucks or a stock GM unit for $25.
Approx 3% of our customers order vacuum advance.:)

Hmmmm,
In a sort of semi technical approach I tell customers who are purchasing
one of my SBC / 8ba distributors if their motor pulls 15 inches of vacuum use the
can. Obviously (3) 2's with straight linkage and a 400 jr cam (or equiv) make a vac
can useless. A decent street Flathead with let's say a Max 1 or equiv cam and
two 2's will ,I do believe, benefit from the use of a can...the adjustable cans are
especially nice. Lower cylinder temps and better mpg are tough to argue with.

Using the vac adv with the L-100 works wonders in richards car anyone that doesn't take advantage of this is just loosing the economy it provides. Jim yoou have to experiment with these ignition systems to learn how they work, We've been doing this for several years. We've been through several carburetors and dozens of advance curves, Documenting the results.

Re: 8BA Distributor

What, specifically, is inferior about a properly working 8BA distributor? My recond 8BA distributor worked fine in my recond motor - stock, except for 4 inch crank. Believing some hype about the Mallory dual point distributors, I bought one a while back and recently fitted it. No noticeable improvement. What is it about the Chevy conversion that is superior to the Lodomatic and the Mallory?

Re: 8BA Distributor

49,
The sbc dist does not require a lot of fancy smanchy attachments and
upgrades to be effective. Mine use single points and can spin the motor with no
point float past 5500 grand no sweat. If you wish to expiriment with the curve
you simply remove the cap and rotor and VIOLA the weights springs and limit bushing
are at your finger tips. No need to remove the dist from the motor.
Down the road if you wish to run 2x2's the all vac Loadmaster will receive
a too low vac signal and not function properly....the motor will run but it won't run
at its full potential.

Re: 8BA Distributor

The addition of a vacuum canister will improve fuel mileage. Several companys make adjustable ones, we use Accel. Start with 6-8 degs advance with a max machanical advance of 20 degs and go from there. Doesn't make any differance what or how many carbs you have. However when you start adding carbs you should be checking your A/F ratio.

Be sure you use MANIFOLD vacuum, not vacuum from a carburetor port.
