1940 Ford Dash

Has anyone out there narrowed a '40 Ford dash to fit a '32? Where did you cut it? I have seen a few, the proportions all look perfect. I only get one chance at this - I want to get it right the first time!

Rich, did you get the pic I sent you of the dash in Jeff Norwell's pickup. He is a member here in the Barn.

I too would like to see how this is done. Would make a good "tech" article.

There is a few ways you can do it. Cut her in the center by the radio speaker hole and shorten the grill on the one side to fit. This way you'll have the ashtrays to use. The second would be to trim the ends a inch and slice a few cuts to make a tighter radius to turn in the ends by the ashtrays. It all depends on if you want to use the ashtrays. If not using the ashtrays just pie cut ends and tuck them in. The top will have to be streached in the center or ends will have to be shrunk because of the radius. You also can cheat if no streacher or shrinker is around with cuts and hammer and dolly top to fit.
Also when your done with the top you might want to cut a few slots in the top by the windsheild for defrost:D

I've taken hundreds of photos of vintage dashes in '32 Fords. This '32 roadster with a '40 dash is one of my favorites.

I did a post over on the Jalopy Journal on 40 Dashes in other cars. Seems to be a very popular dash to use. I think one of the best looking ones, but I'm partial. I even put a car dash in my pickup project.

I put one in my model A, trimed the ears off and took the point back so it was flat. I did not have to section it just roll the outside corners a little.

Re: 1940 Ford Dash

Finally got around to focusing on my 40 dash in my 32. seems I have to cut 2 inches out of the center. My 32 dash is 40 inches wide the distance from center to the steering column is exactly 10 inches. On the 40 dash the steering column is 11inches from center. if I cut 2 inches out of the center My steering column, shift linkage etc lands exactly where henry intended it to on a 40 dash. Thanks for the input guys. Cant seem to find a Ruined 32 dash to use as a foundation and attaching point for my 40 dash, guess some sheetmetal fabrication is next!

Great pictures! I can see where most have been worked on, but the yellow and white one in the roadster-----I really dont have a clue. Are roadsters wider than closed cars? Thanks!
