Testers ? Looking for advice ? What is a better all around tester, an analog or digital ?
|
Re: Testers ? The only thing I have observed after many decades of using both, the digital requires a good solid connection or the reading just keeps searching.
|
Re: Testers ? Depends on what you're testing. I prefer a digital MM for most voltage and continuity-based tests - is easy to use, easy to read, small footprint, etc.. I come from a world of big-black analog testers (you guys know what I'm talking about) - but haven't used mine in years. Now for things like condensers, the good ole' stuff is the best.

Re: Testers ? I tend to stick with the analog stuff since I’m testing things that were made in an analog world. But that’s just me.
|
Re: Testers ? Digital but like said sometimes analogue is better or just a plain old test light.
|
Re: Testers ? Analog...For a steady reading...This, especially, when around ignition voltage interference...
|
Re: Testers ? Maybe its just my cheap digital tester but I find it is useless when my 52 Merc is idling. The numbers are jumping all over the place just standing near the car with no connection to it. Ignition interference I guess. Its fine for voltage testing when the engine is off.

Re: Testers ? 1 Attachment(s)
Got one of these in the trunk of my ‘41, doesn’t take up much room, great for quick troubleshooting.

Re: Testers ? Analog for sure.

Re: Testers ? Thank U guys, looks like analog is a good option ! Appreciate the input.

Re: Testers ? 1 Attachment(s)
I got one of these from the snap on truck last week.

Re: Testers ? I'm with the analog crowd but digital can be useful for small readings. digital does tend to "wander" around with the readings.

Re: Testers ? Years ago, I asked a sparkie [electrician] at work, if he could help me diagnose some problem I had with my 35. He walked up to my running 35, with his digital meter in hand, and his meter promptly blew up! EMF coming off of the HT leads fried his meter. He still bleats [moans] about that!
i have noticed, in the dark, lights off, that with the engine running, the LED taillights flicker on and off. Engine goes rump, rump, rump, lights blink on and off in time! |

Re: Testers ? As others have said, you can do a lot of car troubleshooting with just a cheap Harbor Freight test light.

As far as cheap digital meters, they are many times worthless in a high RF environment which includes near a running car engine. If you prefer digital at all costs, the expensive ones work fine right next to a 5 kilowatt broadcast transmitter. |
