drag link advise

I'm installing a new set of teflon cups, springs, and end caps on my drag link and rod. Is there a rule of thumb how tight to make them, or a typical depth to stop screwing down the cap?

I tighten them down until tight, then back off 1/2 turn.Balls should be round & not oval or the teflon will wear out quicker. Also, grease well & realign wheels.

It only requires a 25% load on the springs in the tie rod and drag link ends.

As a suggestion, after completing installation, have someone move the free play in the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the ends of the tie rod and drag link; there should be no movement at the steering arms and pitman arm; if there is movement take another turn in on the plug end that moves.

The last item, when complete, check the toe in on your front wheels as any change in the tie rod length will effect toe in.

Hope I have not confused you.

Have you measured your balls ?? Steering balls, that is.. If they are worn much more than about .020" you might consider replacing them.. As said, the springs should be compressed about 1/4 of its length, but, the newer springs seem to be different length than the originals and there may be trouble with the caps and cotter pins so you may have to tighten them a bit more.. If replacing the tie-rod springs then the toe-in will have to be re-set[1/16"]..

Thanks for the great advise - as I am in the chassis stage of a frame off Restoration alignment will be done to the T. I am love'n the feel of the teflon and am glad I chose the style. Both axles on, backing plates this weekend along with the front end. It's starting to look like a piece of ART!!
