newbie question - tummy room
 

As I continue my search for my first T I realized that the amount of room behind the wheel is not the same for all body styles and years. I have to admit to being a bit portly and this can present a problem. I've read about fat-man steering wheels and mods to the seat to get more room. Yesterday there was a local car show in town which included a few Ts. I had the opportunity to sit in a '24 touring car and was pleased to find plenty of tummy room. I also sat in a TT truck with a wooden phone booth type cab and it was too tight. I saw a 1910 touring also and it appeared to have even more room than the '24 touring. My question is does a roadster have comparable tummy room to a touring car? Visually they look similar, but I did not have the opportunity to sit in one. What models typically have the most room?

I know the pre 15 Ts have the smaller steering wheel.

You definitely want to stay away from the "improved" Model Ts, which are the 1926 and '27 models that not only look sleeker, more modern (relatively speaking), but also have the fuel tank 10 inches away from your belly, behind the dashboard. Drill a hole and meet your creator!

I'm fat and I've got a '21 touring and a '26 Tudor. I fit fine in both. And it's true. The gas tank on the '26 is in the dash. The one in the touring is a lot safer. It's directly under the front seat.

Thanks for the responses. So pre-'26's have more room and are a bit safer because of the gas tank location. For the same year, say 1925 for example, how does a roadster compare to a touring for tummy room? I ask because there is a roadster pickup in the area for sale. I sat in a '24 touring and it had adequate paunch room, is the roadster comparable?

I think Garrison was being tongue in cheek touting the pre26 Ford gas tanks being in a safer location. Drive into the flame or have it jettison you out of the T ;)

Being rotund myself, I had no problems in our 26 roadster or 22 RPU. I however, had a problem reaching the pedals in our 27 speedster.

You shouldve seen me and Mike in the Pollinator. We got ourselves cheek to cheek and then squished down into the seat. Getting jettisoned is impossible with out some black powder underneath us!
Make yourself some pedal extenders out of some square aluminum tubing... Comfort is paramount! ws
