Tired of mirror glare at night?

Here is a quick, cheap, and simple solution to mirror glare at night with our old mirrors that don't have a "night" setting like modern mirrors. Just cut a piece of window tint material as shown. Keep it on your sun visor until night comes then just slip it over your rearview mirror to reduce the brightness of headlights behind you. So much more comfortable. Note: Be sure to use the lightest material you can find as its affect is doubled when the light passes through it to the mirror then back through it again to your eyes. On the mirror the effective dimming is as shown in the picture where the material is doubled in the corners where it goes behind the mirror. Any darker and it will be darker than the "night" settings on modern mirrors.

Nice idea! I also like the cute model airplane hanging down from the mirror ! However in my state the highway patrol might not think it would be so cute.

Yes, Cessna 195 first built and flown in 1947, the same year as my car.
Right after my 15 year old son and I finished the restoration we decided we wanted some kind of bobble to hang from the mirror. I was thinking a crystal as I liked the looks of them so we went to the mall to look. Went everywhere and found some pretty nice crystals but the last stop was the Halmark card store that had a whole wall of Christmas tree ornaments. We saw this plane and thought it would be cool so bought it to hang on the mirror. Because of the total chrome exterior I thought it was much newer. But, when we got it home and was reading about the plane we discovered the coincidence that the plane was first built and flown the same year as our car!

I have an alternate bobble which is a neclace charm of Howard Hugh's "Spruce Goose" that had it's one and only flight in 1947 as well. We trade them off.

Here's the Goose bobble. It may look huge and I wish it was. Its only 1" diameter.

I've tried a lot of mirrors on my car and the best I found were the convex "Peep" mirrors. Nice and close and wide angle for a great view, especially on the right side where I couldn't see anything useful in any other kind of mirror. Convex "Peep" mirror is the only way to go for me. I left my other mirrors on for looks but don't really use them. They're just not as useful as the peep mirrors.

Here's my driver's side. Passenger side is the same.

The latest peep mirrors now come with turn signal lights in them. I think they run about 60.00 a pair.

Re: Tired of mirror glare at night?

One small addition to the mirror filter that comes in handy.
The simple filter hangs on the mirror fine in the winter but in the summer it tends to float off of the mirror with any air movement through the car, which, you know, is essential in the summer. So, I added two small magnets stuck together on each side of the filter that then stick to the bottom of the mirror frame and hold the filter securely in place in all seasons.

Old Henry. The mirror shown is a 46-48 mirror and it is a tinted glass so looks like you're trying to improve it??? I have one of those on my 35PU and glare doesn't bother me.

When I first read your post I thought you dead wrong as I never noticed any tint on my mirror but I've now done the scientific study that does show the old mirror barely darker than the new mirror. Whether that's intentional tint or just old fading is uncertain but there is something. Certainly not enough for me.

Plane looks like a Cessna 120 to me. Fabric wings, metal body.
