What is the proper break-In procedure for a rebuilt engine? Total rebuild, top and bottom.

A can of worms, but I can tell you what I do. On initial startup I keep the RPMs up and varied to help with cam brake in. I don't let the engine idle during this period. After the cam break in period I try to keep the engine under load as much as possible and again vary the speed.

If you had a shop rebuild it I would say to ask the rebuilder. Otherwise I break engines in gently with varying speeds with light wt oil.

I broke my flathead in with 20 wt oil, and changed it after 100 miles.

For the 1st 20 minuets, I ran it at about 2,000 RPM, and had a hose
spraying a little cool water on the radiator.

After that, I took it to a tar county road that don't see too much traffic.
I drove it at about 40 mph for 10 miles, then went down to 20 mph for
10 miles.
Then I went up to 55 mph for about 15 miles, then up to 65 mph for
about 15 miles.
Then repeated those same numbers, in the same order, on the trip home.

Changed oil with 20 wt. again, and made the same exact trip one more time.

Changed to 15-40 wt. and been useing that since. That was 5 years ago,
and the old flatty runs pretty darn good.

I think it has to do with the type of rings being in the engine. I don't beat on them but I don't baby them. The guy at the end of the assembly line probably drove it like he stole it.

Put the new engine in an old stock car, git on an old track, pedel to the floor about 30-40 laps, if it holds up it back in the street car, it will run for ever. Walt PS ask Old Ron.

there was a discussion about this on a different blog. Walt is just about right. Rings dont seal being babied, they need to be under stress, load, higher pressure etc. Dont let it idle, it needs to be ran under load.

Example:: And then one buys a brand new wood chipper most likely a six or a V8.. start it up and it runs maxed out all day. How many people break in a new lawnmower-nobody.
and they run an run till the wheels fall off. Sometimes you just have to run a new one
on a test stand just to get some bugs tuned in being no different than all Model Ts being
run in with electric motors. Other than that- old saying just put it to work.
