Got a gearbox?

Yesterday I drove 400km to pick up a "new" rear axle för my 33.
And as it goes I got some more pieces ;-)
And i got this mysterious gearbox, He had a 34 that was Hot rodded so teh axle and gearbox and mechanical brakes were removed.

https://www.brandow.eu/aford/018/001.jpg
it was mounted behind a 59AB, that he kept, but in my world it looks like a cut-up Four-cylinder gearbox.

https://www.brandow.eu/aford/018/002.jpg
Seams like it was cut with the gas axe, first time at least.

https://www.brandow.eu/aford/018/003.jpg
According to Google, the Vin number is from a 1939 60Hp. But all 60Hp Boxes I've seen are half the size.

https://www.brandow.eu/aford/018/004.jpg
Never seen this casting number 73-7006-2

https://www.brandow.eu/aford/018/005.jpg
The rear gearbox mount is for 33-34 and mounted for 4 cylinders, so I cant see how they fitted the 59AB.

https://www.brandow.eu/aford/018/006.jpg
The gears are are helical cut, indicates 36-39 i guess.

https://www.brandow.eu/aford/018/007.jpg
Never seen this type of lid.

https://www.brandow.eu/aford/018/008.jpg
Tested another lid from a 78-7006-10 , but the gears became hard to turn with it.

The one on the right came with the box, and are an old style, or?

What do we think it started its days in?

Re: Got a gearbox?

I had 2 of these transmissions but sold them a while ago. I thought them are for Pilot or Thames? definitely not 60hp, those are skinny..

hopefully someone here knows..

If someone try to put them behind 59A, have to cut just like this one or oilpan/ starter would not fit.

Well long story short.
I use my Chinese Mobile camera.
Save the pics to my PC.
Edit them with Picasa 3, Google stopped supporting it in 2016, but it works still
And all pics are on your hard drive, not i some cloud.
You can download it here.
https://www.filepuma.com/download/pi...0729/download/

Then I resize them with Powertoys image resizer.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win.../image-resizer

Use Medium size.
I upload it here as an attachment or on my website and link them.

Re: Got a gearbox?

The "54" prefix on the serial number is for a V8-60 set up. The number would indicate the 1937/39 time frame due to production halt. Ford stopped engine production in December of 1937 due to overstock with S/N 54-468967 and didn't start production again till April 1939. They did have enough engines to keep stamping them though. When they resumed production in 1939, they started with S/N 54- 476288. The last design change was for the 1940 model year when they stopped making the tin side versions.

The V8-60 for passenger cars used the same style of trans case as the larger engines evident by the casting number on this example but the gears were different and it has a narrow 4-bolt tower. This would be the 74 prefix case. There was a different case available for the commercial models that has a 73 prefix. The 37/39 transmission for passenger cars had all 74 prefix case & gears and are not interchangeable with the 85 or 95 HP V8 engines. Optionally, the commercials used the same gears as the larger V8 passenger cars but they used the "73" case. In 1940, they changed the standard transmission design for all passenger car V8 models to the side loader and the V8-60 units still had their own gears and were unique to the V8-60.

After so many years, parts could have been changed around to about any gear set available. Hot rodder's tended to be hard on gears. Here is the link.

Re: Got a gearbox?

That cut out would make me look for another case. Use the guts, mount and top, but another case.

Re: Got a gearbox?

Thank for the info.

If I understand right it's for a 39-40 Fourcylindr commercial truck/car.

I will put it on a shelf for now, but I have 48 and 78 cases to put the gears in.

Could be good to have a spare one, I have broken some over the years ;-)

Re: Got a gearbox?

Lars, the answer is above, but I also have one of those. V8-60 but a commercial vehicle with V8-85 type gears. The bellhousing bolts sort of match up but the release shaft clashes with the starter. I cut out the clutch pivot parts and used the ones from the broken bigger V8 trans I had damaged.
This was early Old Rusty days.
Mart.
Edit: the cut out area is where the V8-60 box covers the starter.

Thanks, Mart
In Sweden, we have the clutch pivot parts, on the left side ;-)
If I do anything I will put the gears in another housing.

Was just curious what it was used for from the beginning.

Re: Got a gearbox?

Strange that I should run across this thread just after seeing one of these on Cleveland, TN FB. Looks to be complete, outside is crusty but the interior is very clean. ID# is 54-23176 or 54-23I76. Looked in the Green Book but couldn't find it. Is it worth the $100 the lady is asking?

Tried to cut and paste pics but that doesn't seem to work here.

Re: Got a gearbox?

I think the 54-23176 you are looking at is the serial number not a part number
but I think there should be more numbers.
