Need help with pressure plate
 

In Les Andrews book he states that the pressure plate fingers need to be adjusted to 5/8 inch from the pressure plate collar. Is this measurement taken like picture A or picture B? Is it even possible to do this with it installed...? I had the engine rebuilder install it and the clutch and I'm not sure he adjusted them...

I made up a shim and turned the motor over with a crank and the 5/8 shim fit a tad loose between the bottom of each finger and the collar. I think they are correct. I readjusted the clutch to about 1" of play and everything looks right.

What problems are you having?? Is the clutch chattering ?? You can't really adjust the fingers correctly when in the car.. But, when I do adjust them in the car, I mark/number the fingers, press the clutch pedal just until one or two just fingers contact the bearing then adjust the others to have a drag on a .0015" or .002" feeler strip.. It'll take a couple laps around the clutch and many operations of the clutch pedal to get this where you want it and should help with the chatter.. It may take an hour which beats removing the clutch from the car..

Thanks Patrick, I haven't had it running yet but hope to today. I had my engines rebuilt and I rebuilt the tranny last winter. I'm just trying to get the preliminary set up.

The problem with measuring the tops of the fingers is that often the contact surface is worn more on one finger than another. So a final adjustment using feeler gauges is more accurate. After setting them with a feeler gauge, I then use bluing on the TO bearing and check the contacts with a light pressure on the pedal. When they're all contacting at once, it will eliminate any chatter caused by uneven fingers. It will not help chatter from grease or cracks in the flywheel or pressure plate or from uneven spring strength.

Adjustment of the clutch fingers is usually done on a rebuilding table and adapters are placed under the pressure plate to simulate the disc distance. Spring pressure and spring insulators which keep the springs insulated from the heat of the need be checked. Some of the non cushioned center hubs(have no springs to absorb the engagement and dis engagement of the clutch are of different thicknesses. Proper depth of the flywheel ledge where the pressure plate bolts to should be correct for the thickness of clutch disc. if making an adjustment the adjustment nuts need be re struck to hold their adjustment.
