8 inch rear-end
 

hi all ! a buddy of mine is looking for an 8 inch rearend for his car I stripped and junked probably 30 ford galaxys back in the 80,s. mostly 63 s an 64 s would any of these have an 8 inch ? how can I tell? nothing older than 1964 the rear ends are up in the pucker brush . is there an easy way to tell will they still be good after 25 years thanks mike in mass

I don't know. You might want to pinch one to be sure. Problem is by that age, they're usually too fat and full of cellulite.:eek:

If you can get a socket on the bottom bolt under the pinion then its an 8 inch.If only an open end wrench or box end will go on it then its a 9 inch. 63/64 Galaxies had 9 inch rearends. The mid size Fairlane/Torino platform with the small block would have had the 8 inch.
After 25 years with condensation in it they may be rust pitted.Won't know until you pull a chunk out of your rearend .:)....

You didn't say what your friend is putting the 8" rear end into.
Ferreiras in Carver is where I got all of the 8" and 9" rear ends that I have needed. Give me a call when you are driving through so we can have coffee and I'll show you my collection.

Some cars with 8 inch rears to look for are the 62 and up V-8 Fairlanes, Torinos, Rancheros, (except 390s which sould have 9 inchers) Falcons with V-8s, Mustangs 64-70 with V-8s and big sixes, mavericks with V-8s and big sixes, Granadas and Monarchs (some will have 7.5 inchers, they will have removeable inspection plates, ala chevy 10 bolts). The narrowest will be 62-65 Fairlanes and 63-65 V-8 Falcons. Good luck!

The Maverick should be the same width as the '63-'65 Falcon, '63-'65 Comet and the 64-1/2-66 Mustang which is about the the same width as the full size Fords from '49 thru '59. The '66 and up Fairlane/Torinos with sixes and 302s had the 8 inch but were wider. Any Fairlane/Torino with a 351 or larger engine has the 9" rear. I once owned a '65 Falcon Sprint in which the pinion seal was leaking. I installed the "punkin'" out of a '70 302 Torino because the casting is stronger and the bearing larger.
I have an 8" rear out of a either a '65 Falcon or '66 Mustang ( can't remember which) for $150.00. 50 miles west of Albany; 10 miles south of Cobleskill.

Al, if I remember my measuring correctly, the 62-65 V-8 Fairlane is the narrowest of the 8 inchers, except for maybe the 63-65 V-8 Falcon. That would make the narrowest 9 incher one from a hi-po 63-65 Fairlane. As you and I know, and for the benefit of those who don't know, the narrowest 9 incher will be from an early Bronco, like the one I sold to you for the 48 coupe that I later bought from you; what goes around, comes around!

If any rear axle has been laying on the ground in your climate, I would pass. Look in to a Ranger 8.8 axle if you cant find a good 8 inch. Be aware on the Rangers, they have big brakes, and small brakes. The small brakes were inadequate on a Ranger. The brakes interchange on the housings, just change the backing plates and drums.

I think the '57 to '59 Ford 9" rears were among the narrowest and were a direct bolt-in for the "shoebox" Fords, the '63-'65 Falcon/Comets and the '65' and '66 Mustangs.
' course, how many of them are you goin' to find nowadays? LOL

The Mustang II with V8 used a narrow 8". Mine is from a 1978.

It was very close to the same width as the Pinto rear that it replaced in the old Vicky.

To georgewarren and anyone with Bronco rear info.

You mention Bronco rears. I have a early Bornco rear, about 1974, their pinion is about 1" to the right of center on them. How does it function in your 48? Is there anything special needed in relation to the driveshaft angle? I plan to put it in my36 Convert.
