Any suggestions on transporting a T long distance?
 

I'm buying a Model T from Missouri and it will be about 800 miles on an open trailer and was wondering how I should strap the car down. I always loop through the rims with the straps straight in front and cross them in the back on newer cars. I'm a bit hesitant with the wood rims, afraid I might damage them this way. My other concern is the car is a 26 Tudor with the original top, do I have to worry about this ripping off at 75 mph for 12+ hours? The car has been sitting in a garage since the mid 40's and is all there but does not run. The owner has two manifolds, one with a Holley the other is a Kinston regenerator and he does not know which was on the car originally. Would anybody know which it should be and is there a difference?

I strap the axles. Some tie the front axle to the rear of the trailer, some the other way. I would put the top down and remove the floor boards. Fold down the windshield if you can. Strap the hood or remove it if needed. Others will have more ideas.

A vaporizer should be original on a 26 or 27. Most of us have Holley NH carbs on now. Run what you like and that you can make run good.

Its a two door. I would cover with a good tarp and remove the hood or tie down. Make sure the sun visor is ether on tight or remove. The Kingston regenerator is somewhat rare and not much in the way of parts. The ones that are out there are reported to be good carbs. There is one on ebay now.

Good catch, it must have been late and I thought it was an open car. Yes, I tarp my Fordor when transporting and would probably mount on trailer backwards for a trip that long.

I just trailered my newly aquired T home on an open trailer for about 500 miles. I used 4 x 10,000 lb straps. Two from the front axle to the rear of the trailer, and two from the rear axle to front of the trailer. I drove through the mountains in PA and never had an issue....never even had to tighten a strap up on the way home. I checked them multiple times and they were fine.

Top will peel off
 

You will rip the top off using an open trailer .... :cool:

That should go in an enclosed trailer

If it's a nice car i would definatly pay the extra money and go with an enclosed trailer.

Point taken.........Leaving my open trailer home and borrowing a friends enclosed for the trip. Thanks for the offer and advice.

If you have access to a friends closed trailer, that's the best option - but if you ever have to use an open, don't try to tarp the car. You may tie it as tight as you can, the tarp will still flap until the paint is ruined.
Use plastic shrink wrap instead - will save your top in high speeds without any paint damage.

Actually looking forward to the trip, we are taking a few extra days on the way there to see the sights along the way. A pain in the butt with a trailer but I need to get away for a few days.
I sure it would be reasonable for him to haul it but road trips a fun(usually)

Anytime you can take a road trip to get your car yourself,
that is the best thing to do, glad you are taking an enclosed trailer !

Back in 72,I flat towed a 14 T runabout for 600 miles by removing the U-joint & bolting a tow bar to the front axle.It cruised along nice at 60 mph behind my 64 Falcon stn wagon.

Brought the T home last night, what an adventure. Two days 1,640 miles from Buffalo NY to Missouri and back. Spent all day today sorting parts and get a game plan and list together to order. My wife absolutely loves it.
Not a hole in the body, all the floor are original and solid. Numbers match on the title and motor. Front seats are shot but the rest of the interior isn't to bad. The car sat since right after WWII so it is pretty good condition.

Looks like a realy nice clean car, congrats on your purchase. i noticed your from buffalo NY. i have a pretty nice 26 tudor and live in Amherst NY, if you need to referance how anything goes back together.

I was hoping I could find one local to study. This thing is so foreign compared to the Mustangs i have always worked on, I'll need to take some pictures.

I'm just glad it's not getting hacked into a rat rod. That was the sellers only concern that I would not cut it up. He had higher offers but would not sell because they said it would be cut up.
