With the thing 90% plus solid survivor and the bottom of the door and driprail absolutely shot...I think you could make a pretty good case for fixing those and trying for some fake patina where repaired. You have the metal skills, you and the stripers probably could come up with a painting technique for those areas, then we could erase this thread and pretend it never happened...

I've only owned it for a couple days now...

At first I was excited... I've never "restored" anything... and this is for sure a good solid foundation to do so...

Sitting in it last night in the garage ... looking at all the interior panels... I turned the windshield crank... and wouldn't you know.. it cranked out...and the cowl vent worked...etc..
I am leaning towards leaving it alone... more or less....

I just want to do it justice...one way or another

9 years on the road... 63 years in a shed....put a battery in it....

head lights work - parking lights work - turns over with the starter button ....but..... unfortunately no spark....

good news though... 9/34 rearend!

I would recommend going with a (9:34) 3/78 rear gear and 28T trans. You will find that is a good driving range and will get you down the interstate. Go with 6:50 size tires for a little more speed. As for the engine, it should be no problem to make it a 100hp by going to 3 3/16 bore and if desired, go with the 4" crand and and a set of 59AB heads with the 59 and B ground off leaving the A. Most onlookers would believe it is a stock engine. There should be a 39 book in the making at the EV8 Club and I am sure detail pictures of your panel would be valuable for that book. I have a original 39std cpe (with 59AB) if you need any orig item pics. I also have removed the original hood props and springs from my 39 and 37s and use a broom handle, curde but saves the hood, original props are fine for judging.

That's a great find and a very cool motor.

Must be the first 39 sedan delivery I've seen, sort of assumed they'd share the 40 body shape, as do the rest of the 39's.

Maybe as a commercial, it was judged ok to stay with the older shape.

Zach, I also have a 1939 Sedan Delivery which I bought around 1997. I had great plans to street rod it with a SB Ford and AOD transmission. It is not nearly as nice as yours and the previous owner had made changes that were done without much thought. For instance, at one time, it had a SB Chevy engine and the steering column tube was cut to allow room for the exhaust manifold. The frame was also butchered. The rear suspension was converted to leaf springs and each end was held on by one bolt and a tack weld. I cleaned up and repaired the frame and put in a Mustang II rack & pinion. Replaced the firewall with a set back unit. Decided to put in hidden hinges in the front doors and the rear door. Bought all of the parts but never got around to it. I also have NOS front fenders that I picked up in Ohio.

Over the past 10 years, it's been sitting in my garage waiting for something. I seem to be the only member of my family and friends that likes the looks of it but I do plan on completing it some day.

I guess what I'm saying is - keep it original. If I had made mine original, I'd probably be driving it now.

Please let me know if I can help in any way. I'm also in PA along I-81 so we're not that far apart.

There were a few emails about the neat rear bumper. I had mine replated by Labrandi's in your neck of the woods.

Can you tell how the rear door lock cylinder is installed, and works?

Mine just looks like a hole knawled in the wood...
I'm guessing someone broke in by drilling out this cylinder?
The front door handles were bent way up in the air such that maybe someone was trying to pry them open... I got them straightened out... but the missing parts in the back have me a little baffled

kube mentioned that the cylinder should be the same as the front doors and 35fordtn is going to help me out by bringing along a cylinder to Hershey for me... but... just trying to figure out how it actually all goes together...

I have to work on some other projects over the weekend... but hopefully I can atleast get the distributor off and cleaned up... maybe we can make this sucker run!

Zach, I took a quick look at my rear door and it does look like the handle and lock are the same as the side door. There is a plate the holds them in place. You can sort of see it in one of the pictures that I posted last night. I'll be away until late Monday and will take more pictures then if you need them. Bob

Figured out the latch... should be just fine once I get the cylinder... the hole in the wood was filled with gunk that looked like wood... but turned out the be dirt or a bugs nest or something... all made sense once I got that cleaned out!

now to get the lower hinge fixed so the door doesnt sag so bad.....

I'm looking for a cigarette lighter, windshield crank knob, door window crank knobs, shifter knob & cowl vent handle that will match the age/wear of the rest of the vehicle...
