texas t -adjusting timing
 

hello- with the no. 1 cylinder at tdc of compression and rotor pointing to no. 1 wire cap nub , where is the LOCK RELEASE that lets me rotate the shaft to the place where the points start to open? is it the black band where the spark advance linkage attaches to the distributor?

also when bturning the crank to get tdc, the piston stays at tdc while i turn
the crank about 15 degrees, so should i use where piston first reaches top?

there is a lot of play in the shaft, so should i [after someone tells me how to release the lock] rotate distributor counter clockwise[not jiggle shaft] while looking for points to open?

I'd imagine that you haven't gotten any responses yet because it's more than likely most of the guys here are running the original timer rather than a distributer. As you know I'm sure, distributers ona T are all aftermarket items, and how you go about setting the timing probably varied from manufacturer to manufacturer.

If it appears that the piston isn't moving for 15 degrees of crank revolution, IMHO, I would use the center of that 15 degree arc as the point for setting the timing.

Going by a Model A rotate the crank till the piston just reaches TDC before the few Deg extra rotation for the down stroke comes in .hold the rotor so all lash is out ,with the leaver fully retarded the points should just be opening ,and the rotor up to half way through cap contact .

thanks to all who replied-i found the pdf was not helpful- i did a lot of experimenting and think i could even help anyone who might need some help-sorry for late response, i thought i was not going to get answer ,so i stopped checking the forum for a few days

You can purchase a timing gage that will help you find TDC - it even has marks to tell you where 15 degrees is-- Try Lang's

Using a distributor on a T engine and setting the timing kinda depends on how exact do you want to be. I guess thats true even without a distributor??
TW components here in Indy makes this tool available from many suppliers.
It screws in the t head touches the piston top and is degreed with markings. His instructions show the specs for all the T engines...

Also there are marked pullys available from other suppliers to allow the use of the timing light.
My preference for the T engine would be a full automatic advance distributor set up for the ts low rpm. Set it and drive it , no spark rod needed..:eek:
