Solenoid question Have 40 ford coupe with 12 volt conversion makes a clicking noise just installed new battery today still doing tapped on starter still same clicking noise.
My question was to see if anyone has had this situation before and if so do you think it is solenoid. If so any recommendations on solenoid to use Thanks |
Re: Solenoid question Get serious with your testing and use a voltmeter or multimeter or a 12 volt test light and find out where you are getting power or not getting power. Check to see if you have power on the main battery terminal of the solenoid. Then check for power on the starter cable side of the solenoid while you are operating the starter button or key. Also a good condition battery is a must. A 12 volt battery should have 12.6 volts at rest. If your battery is faulty or flat then the results you are getting could be the result. Guessing is not an option, you have to test to eliminate items. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Solenoid question 6 volt solenoid will work. But you can get a 57... or so, "I'm only familiar with 12v '57 ford systems outside of 6v" it's a 4 pole ford soleniod for 12v use. 4th pole is just a starting intermediate 12v coil jumper wire. It will certainly work in your application.
Oh course check your grounds. . |
Re: Solenoid question Thanks Kevin for information.

Re: Solenoid question 1 Attachment(s)
Roadster: If it helps, here's a photo of the 12V solenoid in my 40.
My old one was just clicking with a new battery so I took a chance and replaced it. If you have the equipment do as Koates suggested first. I bought this solenoid on Ebay on 5/23/2013 for a total of $11.71 and it's still working fine. Direct screw in. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Standard-T-...Gz4vJmfjq_o8jw By the way, take your bad solenoid apart. It's neat to see how they work and can deteriorate from electrical arcing of the contactor. The brown wire on the right on my solenoid goes to the alternator. |
Re: Solenoid question Quote:
So forty, this is a 12v 80s solenoid? 4 pole being a constant 12v feed? Curious? thank you. |
Re: Solenoid question 1 Attachment(s)
I use a Cole Hersee 24060 12 volt solenoid. It works with the stock Ford 1 wire ground button.available at Oreiely and others.

Re: Solenoid question Tinker, Yes, I think so. I don't use the stock Ford starter button on the dash. I installed a separate "hidden" starter button under the dash to deter theft.
