Glass top for 5 window coupe

Maybe a crazy idea, but was thinking about putting glass or plexiglass on my top instead of putting new vinyl up there. Anybody else done it or thought about it. Would be a big moon roof!.....suggestions ?

You make cook on sunny days. That was why the 54-55 Skyliner did not sell.

Tom,
Cook you certainly will plus in my very humble opinion your
beautiful '36 will loose a lot in the vintage style department.

Not a great idea - just quietly forget it.

A fellow in my club did that to a 36 coupe. Even with tinted glass, he was warm!

started removing the hold top today, what a mess! It was glued down , will take some time to clean it up for sure. I have checked with Lebaron bonney on their headliner kits and will see what they have to offer. I see Macs and Drake sell interior stuff also, anybody use them by chance for that?

Re: Glass top for 5 window coupe

Tom,
OK so much for the see thru roof. I used the L-B stuff to do my '35 and
was very satisfied. It's a little hard to explain but to get the best install with no
ripples I made a frame work out of 2x2's that was big enough to encompass the
entire roof area. I tacked the material on to the frame so it was taught. Next
step was to apply contact cement on 'rail' that runs around the inside perimeter
of the top opening and also on the bottom face of that area on the fabric. There
is enough flex in the material so you are able to lower the frame with the stretched
material on it in place over the opening. While two of your steadiest buddys lower
the frame EXACTLY right you sweat bullets and using a soft rubber mallet tap the
material on to the 'rail' . The contact cement will grip like an alligator and form
a solid bond between the rail and the material and you will have no ripples. Go have
a few beers and once you sober up trim the material even with the outside rim
of the 'rail'.

Thanks Charlie for the good tips on the vinyl top, your friend had a brain fart today with the glass top idea! Oh well, sometimes you have to think outside the box! lol.....I am sure there will be more questions from me about this, be prepared to humor me!:o

I'm not a purist but what I did was make a fiberglass "oversert" not an "insert". I never liked the cloth filler idea and I would NEVER cut any original Henry sheet metal. I still have the mold for this.

I'll attach some pics.

Also search the archives for a post I put on maybe a year ago or two.
