52 F3 Transmission

My husband is looking to rebuild the transmission in his 1952 F3. He took it to a shop and after looking at it they said they would need to machine some of the parts as they are no longer available. Is this true? Does anyone know of a good site for transmission parts?
thanks!

Re: 52 F3 Transmission

Tell your husband to keep the trans at home. He should purchase a copy of Mac Van Pelts book on trans rebuilding. He can do it him self and there are parts available from Mac as well as many other sources.

I would think that would be the HD granny low 4 speed transmission. I don't know if Mac covers that in his book, but I'm sure he would know about parts availability.

thanks everyone there is nothing that we know of mechanically wrong with it. It worked fine when we took it out. Since doing a full rebuild just wanted to maybe update parts so wouldnt have to pull out again in the near future.

I'd be surprised if you ever have to do anything to it. Most were never worked very hard and they're just about indestructible. I used a 3 spd HD for 10+ years in my daily without doing anything to it - thrashed on it hard - and finally last year I had to replace the front bearing.

Unless he plans to use it hard every day, I'd just smile and put it back in there.

If Mac doesn't carry the parts, call Joblot in NY..... oh, and I'd find another transmission shop - the one you're using doesn't want to be bothered on old stuff. IMHO

Re: 52 F3 Transmission

Perhaps Rebelskichick can give us a bit more information on which trans they have. The 1952 F3 could have the 4 speed non-synchro T8....or it could be the 4 speed synchro T98....or it could have the HD 3 speed synchronized T87 trans.

We have the usual ball and roller bearings, gaskets, grease seals. But certain gears are getting harder to find, and more expensive to purchase.
