Bumper jack handle

1 Attachment(s)
I have a 8A-17080-A2 1948 Ford V8 passenger bumper jack which is also for earlier model V8's and I would like to make up a jack handle for this jack, refer to photo, as the parts, and this jack are hard to find.
I would be pleased to obtain the measurements of this handle, and I would say it would be made out of 9/16" round steel which would fit into the mechanism of the jack, with a tongue on one end to remove the hubcap and on the other end there would be a 45d bend to the wheel nut socket.

Although this is not for your specific year, they were much the same for many years.

Re: Bumper jack handle

I agree with 51 Merc --- that is the handle you are looking for. I have a 1949 and that is the jack that came with the car -- although I would never use it. These style lug handles really never changed over the years. Go find one. They are every where.

Re: Bumper jack handle

These style lug handles are most likely plentifully in the USA ,not so much here ,I have a collection of jacks but not that one ,Ian would want the correct one going by the high standard of restoration on his 32 3 window coup .

Re: Bumper jack handle

Thanks to everyone for your help and replys, as Ted has remarked there was not that many of those Canadian V8 models imported here, so I am contacting Lin Stacey for more information, so I can make a correct one. It is hard enough to find a jack for these 1946-48 models as they were not supplied with the car and were supplied as an accessory by Ford dealers I believe.

Unless you are prepared to fabricate the handle out of drop forged, heat treated steel such as chrome-vanadium you will never make a "correct one"

Re: Bumper jack handle

Looking at the picture, I reckon you could make one out of a Model A crank handle.

Re: Bumper jack handle

What is the diameter of the steel in a Model A crank handle as the diameter of the round steel in the handle for the jack is 9/16" which is not a standard size for stock bar. I know I will probably have to turn down any round bar in the lathe to that size which is not a problem as long as the straight bit is about 24" long.

Re: Bumper jack handle

Sounds like a lot of work. I realize that shipping is costly, but every American vehicle from 1949 - 1980 probably had one in it -- unless of course it was metric -- but you should be able to have someone in North America ship you one for cost of shipping.

Re: Bumper jack handle

Ian, I would guess that many Barner's here would have one of these handles that they would just send you for the cost of mailing. I know I have two or three of them at home that I have no use for. When I get back home I will check to see if any match 51 Merc's picture.

Re: Bumper jack handle

The Model A crank is 11/16 diameter and 19" long.

Re: Bumper jack handle

Thanks for the measurements 'Justin'.

'John' that would be great, I have seen photos of a earlier Ford bumper jack with the handle and it had a shorter bent section after the socket. I have sent an email too Lin Stacey about the handles so I will wait for his reply and I will inform you with his information. Thanks

Re: Bumper jack handle

Hmmmm,

That style jack handle has probably been a murder weapon more than any other part on the FH Ford.<grin>

Re: Bumper jack handle

That was likely inspiration for the next model with bend .Laugh,

Re: Bumper jack handle

Thanks for that Trev, I have just emailed John to see how much it would cost to send it to me by ordinary USPS mail, not Priority which is too dear and no faster.
I am not in a hurry for it. I will get back to you.
