White wall tires I recently saw a post were one person didn't like white wall tires, and others did.
Are white walls going out of fashion by way of the solid black tires? |
Re: White wall tires Whitewall tires are a fashion statement. You either like'm or don't. If I owned a show queen classic car (Cadillac, Packard, Duesenberg, etc.) I might run whitewalls. But, my Model-A, no unless it came with them on it when I bought it. In the Model-A era whitewalls were seldom seen on lower cost cars. Occasionally maybe, but very rare.;)

Re: White wall tires really comes down to what you personally like.
I dont like them. Model As appear more authentic to me wo them. as Bob says- on other cars I do sometimes like them. |
Re: White wall tires My car's blue on black, so I think that whitwall tires make it look less depressing and less basic, with it being a standard coupe. I guess it just makes it pop a little more. Really it's all preference.
|
Re: White wall tires They are not going out of fashion and it certainly is a personal preference kind of thing.
I like them because you just don't see large whitewalls on todays cars. |
Re: White wall tires I just don't like them on A's.They take away from the simpleness of the car.A few years ago I bought a phaeton that had new tires on it.The owner had taken off perfectly fine whitewalls, and replaced them with black. He hated the look of the whitewalls on it.A friend brought his A over to me with a new set of whitewalls for me to mount.Instead I bought the car, painted the whitewalls black, and mounted them inside out.I used Zep tire paint, and it is still holding up today.I like them on some 30's cars, and most 50's cars.

Re: White wall tires I purchased 5 new W/W tires for my '29 Tudor. Think it look classy. but to each their own on looks

Re: White wall tires All great feedback as I didn't realize that there were differing viewpoints regarding whitewall tires.
I wasn't sure if the tires detract from the simplistic way of the Model A or not, and not being involved in the hobby for a while shows how times and choices can change. Just trying to stay current with current trends, whats in and whats not in... |
Re: White wall tires On most A's I like black walls but on some they look good. My wife's '30 Roadster (Washington Blue/Duchess Blue) had white walls on it when we bought it and I like them. I'll be ordering a set of white wall American Classic radials soon...:)

Re: White wall tires The white wall is well inset into the tire carcass. The lack of carbon to keep the white is not as strong as the rubber with the much higher carbon content. With this and the tendency for the white rubber to yellow and deteriorate faster, I tend to shy away from white wall tires. They take more maintenance to keep them looking white too.

My car would look funny with WW tires!
|
Re: White wall tires I don't think there is a fashion trend within the Model A community when it comes to white walls. As others have said, you either like them or not. I think if there is a trend, it would be to not have white walls, but that is probably more geared around originality than a fashion trend. White walls on modern cars have long ago gone out of style. I have WW's on my car because my wife likes them. But, crap; they cost a lot more and require a lot of cleaning. While the practical side of me would like black-walled tires, I must say that WW's really make it visually "pop".

Re: White wall tires WW tires have NEVER been in fashion with me……or Mr Ford. Aka Henry

Re: White wall tires Sometimes Henry was too opinionated.

Re: White wall tires I like white walls, but they are impossible to keep clean. I’ll probably go with black walls when I buy my next set.

White wall tires Port-a-walls may be an option. Surprisingly, they are still available on Amazon.com.

Re: White wall tires thats true, but sometimes its not even the money- but the pursuit of the money.
