Transmission Question

Hey Guys!

Quick question regarding the transmission main shaft. I'm currently rebuilding my Roadster transmission and have come across a problem I have never experienced. All the gears in the tranny are good. Basically replacing all bearings and had to replaced the main drive gear because of wear and pitting. The Main Shaft looks good but here is the questions. The U joint bolt and washer that goes into the shaft seems to only tighten half way.. I ordered a new bolt and it stops half way also. Wondering if it's stripped????? Should I..

A. Chase the thread and tap it?
B. Order a new main shaft?

any help would be great.

Justin

Re: Transmission Question

Is there dirt in the bolt hole? Try spraying brake clean or carb cleaner to rinse out hole. When you disasembled the ujoint from the shaft was the bolt seated?

Thanks Ron, I will try that first. I noticed it wasn't seated when disassembling it. Thought maybe the last person just didn't tighten it down enough.

3/8-24 x 1, do you have these dimensions?

Re: Transmission Question

after cleaning it and inspecting it looks like the threads half way down are stripped. I have a 3/8-24 tap that I will chase and try to fix it. Thanks Tom for the dimensions.
