32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Hi all, my SBC 32 Coupe is nice but I don't think I will be happy until it has a customized Trick flathead resting between the rails. If anyone can steer me in the right direction let me know. Is Flathead City my best bet? If anyone has one done and for sale give a shout.

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB We got atleast a handfull good flathead builders on here so just state what you want and they will help you out.

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Walt DuPont builds some pretty nice flatheads, but as said there are plenty here on the Barn. H&H flatheads are also a good choice for turn key motors.

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Big 2 on highway 49 in Gulfport did the machine work on my engine. I just started it for the first time this afternoon. So far, So good.
Talk to them, I think they will build it up for you, too. |
Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Hopefully someone here can recommend a builder in your area. It is so much better when you can be face to face with whoever builds your engine.

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Also try the www.jalopyjournal.com - there are usually one or two running flatties for sale there ....
My avatar has a 59ab installed in it but coupled to a 5-speed. I absolutely love it and will be driving it to the Father's Day Roadster show this June .... |
Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Walt DuPont built one for me and I could not be more pleased. If he was closer I would have him do a couple more. Unlike a lot of west coast builders, his work is professional and required nothing but fuel and spark to run like a kitten. It pays to work with someone with proven experience and a good track record. -Dennis

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB When you decide where to buy your flathead check them out in the archives here and on HAMB. Remember if the company has a symbol (&) in the name it will confuse the search engines here and on HAMB. As an example to find information on a company like A&L (a very excellent Model A parts supplier) you need to google "A&L on fordbarn" or "A&L on hamb" to get results.

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB I've been in touch with Walt. He has what I need. Now I just need to get the trans adapter which I have found. Looking for motor mount adapters now and headers. Thanks all and I will check out that shop on Hwy 49

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB The hard part is going to be finding a block that isn't cracked. You may go through a number before finding a decent builder.
Do you have a good block to start with??? |
Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB I will be buying one all finished and turn key if I can find one complete. As much as I enjoy building engines I don't have the free time to devote to that part of the Hobby any longer. I would like to buy one from Walt but shipping and crating seams to be an issue. There are other rebuilders out there but I'm hesitant to just buy one from an unknown builder as it may be a while before I can fire it up. I feel safe buying from Walt as he has quite a few endorsements from the forum and he is from down East so that makes him an Honest Hombre in my opinion. Right now I'm having trouble locating engine mounts that will work with the frame mounts in the car already. I don't want to cut and weld new pieces on the frame rail, I'd rather try and find something already made up that will mount to the engine and line up with the frame rail brackets that hold the SBC in place. If there is no such beast then I will have to fabricate something. Money isn't an issue, I want a tricked out dressed up multi-carb flathead that wont be too modified so it can be used often and not be finicky but makes over 200HP if there is such a thing. As mentioned before, I know nothing about flathead engines but want to learn and use them to keep that part of the hobby alive and kicking. Anyone can drop a SBC or Ford crate engine in a car but lets face it nothing looks as good or sounds as good as a modified flathead.

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Read the link below for an easy way to mount your flathead in a '32.......SIMILAR to the front mounts on any Chevy. DD

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Dick
I was also going to mention the front motor mounts, if his original cross member is intact. Makes it so easy to put the engine in and no welding Jim |
Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Youre talking 200+Hp street engine...hope you realise this will not be an naturally aspirated engine if you want it to be an all day cruiser.
What transmission do you have in mind ? |

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Yeah Tony, excited AND nervous to get it going thinking about the things that could go wrong. I've only run it enough to set the basic timing and break in the cam. Plenty of advice about waiting until it is in the car under load to run it more.
But I did bring it down to an idle before shutting it down. Big smile :) |

Re: 32 Coupe needs a flathead 59AB Caperss..... First off, congratulations on replacing your SBC with a flathead, I like you already!
Second, welcome to the Barn, everything you will ever need to know is here, and the search engine is your friend. Third, H & H Flatheads are one of the most respected builders anywhere, and they will build exactly what you want, and deliver it anywhere in the world. Fourth, there is a perception out there that the Fordbarn is only for restorers. There are a lot of restorers here, but there are also guys who run at Bonneville, run flathead dragsters, and just run souped flatties in hot rods. We're all one big happy family! |
