Where should I mount this?
 

I am about finished installing a turn signal kit. Front lights, back lights, and back window brake light/signals have been wired in.

I get to this huge flasher thingamagig and I can't decide where to mount this big silver monstrosity and not creating a ugly mess. The only place I can come up with is the steering column, but I really don't want it there.

Any ideas? Where do you guys mount the signal flasher?

Steering column, PERIOD!!! Would you want to be fumbling around somewhere tryin' to find it???

When you get it mounted on your steering column, you will grow to like it there. It's not all that obtrusive and it looks period correct.

Are you not talking about the silver flasher, rather than the indicator switch?? it appears to me like everyone has answered where to locate the indicator stalk/switch. I am yet to mount mine, so interested to see what people suggest.

Yes, it's the Silver Round Flasher that I am referring to. I confused folks by posting the pic of the whole kit. Sorry. I mounted the switch (arm) right below the sparky arm.

My control is just below the wheel at 9:30 o:clock.

I wrapped the wires with the dull black plastic cable shielding available at auto parts stores and have the flasher just above the floorboard, zip tied to the steering column.

Be careful not to kick it as you'll lose your flashers. I thought about mounting it below the floorboard, but I was concerned with chafing the wires.

I purchased woven wire loom and fed all the wires through the cloth loom.

I used the A Style connectors and bullets to create disconnect points between the inside and outside.

Then mounted the relay/flasher using an existing hole in my firewall. The holes were pretty high up in the cab, so the flasher is only visible if you climb around and look for it.

The advantage, I plugged two holes in the firewall, the wires were contained in a period looking loom, and I can easily disconnect/reconnect the switch if/when necessary.

I have seen the flasher mounted behind the panel in the cab area. It looks nice, but you have to remove the panel to replace the flasher unit.

I have one mounted above the kick panel.That is on a 30,I would have to look to see how it would go there on a 28-29.I actually have my signal switch mounted there too.It is mounted fore and aft,to the cowl brace,handle sticking out toward the rear.Up is right and down is left.You can't even see it unless you are looking for it.

If you are using 6 volt LED tail lights you can also use a solid state electronic 6 volt flasher. They are out there on EBay and other sources as they are used on the older Japanese 6 volt motorcycles. They give a very good rate of dependable flash that is always repeatable.

When using LED lights the old bi-metal flashers don't always get enough current draw to flash the lights properly. The flasher units that say Heavy Duty are the worse ones for LED lights as they were actually designed for use with vehicles pulling trailers that added more extra lights to the flasher circuit calling for even more current draw to make the flasher work correctly. The original 6 volt flasher cans that do not say Heavy Duty on them often work fine with LED lights and also give the original style bulbs the best flashing...

Mount it in the engine compartment. Lengthen the wires if you need to.

I mounted a buss bar attached with magnet to the cowl BEHIND the driver's kick panel and the flasher's there also. All wires covered in the original style loom. Stalk is on the strg column.

Think I will paint it black and hide it in the engine compartment some where.

I use the middle bolt of the engine pans by making a loop strap from piece of tin, Its sits inside the frame where the wires from switch run, Front hole has the horn reducer mounted there too , Out of site & protected,

Just put it behind the drivers side cowl kick panel

I mounted mine on the drivers side of the coil by lengthening the wires and using a 1" single leg conduit clamp painted black from the firewall mount screw for the coil. Easy to get to if you want to change it out, and unless looking for it, might be mistaken for a part of the ignition system

Mine is in the engine compartment, bolted to the sheetmetal just above the left motor mount. It is mounted to the back side, so it is invisible but easilay accessed if needed.

If you're using the flasher in the picture you need to have easy access.They don't seem to last at all.I thought I must have had a short that would come and go,something like a chafed wire.A new flasher would last a month,or sometimes a year.The old one I took out of a Studebaker works fine.Then I put one of the new ones in the Studebaker,it heats up,clicks fast,then slow,and stops sometimes.I did find one that seems to be behaving,but if I sit at a stoplight too long it will start to speed up.

Put it behind the drivers side kick panel. If loud enough will hear the clicking which will tell you still have the signal on after a turn as these are not self cancelling like ones on later vehicles. Another suggestion is to make all the connections to the indicator stalk switch and the other wires through a multi pin connector available at Radio shack so you can trouble shoot easily if something does not work. Makes taking out easy
