8 inch rearend in a shoebox

I got a 8 inch rearend out of a 63 falcon station wagon, will it fit in my 51 shoebox with the diff offset?

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

The '51 pinion is offset, at least on mine, 13/16" to the right. Biggest mod is relocating the spring mounts, which are usually wider than the '51s 42" center to center.

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

The different offset will only be a problem if the car is lowered a lot. The drive shaft may hit the tunnel. If the spring pads are off an inch or less, a spacer can be made to take up that much on each side.

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

I have been told by two coupe owners, a 49 and a 50, that the 8 inch from a Maverick is a bolt in.

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

Maverick is 1.25" wider than Falcon, so the Falcon should fit fine...RW

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

My neighbor has built two shoebox Fords and used a Maverick rear in both of them. The Maverick measures 57 1/4" from axle flange to axle flange.

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

Don't worry about the offset. If you lower the rear at all you will be trimming the cross channel about half way up the drive shaft anyway.

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

57-59 9" rear from wagons or ranchero,65-66 mustang v8 rear and 70's maverick rear wil fit..I'm using a 66 mustang rear just had to relocate the spring perch pad..57-59 9" rears would be my choice but a bit to pricey out here in LA

The 8" maverick and comet rear ends are the popular swap, they have the slightly shorter overall length but I believe the spring perch measurement is not exactly the same, close but not 42" as a stock rear. Two other options I've heard about are the late 70's Ford Granada and Lincoln Versailles, both had the 9" rear, while the Lincoln has disc brakes, highly desirable and hard to find. I searched for a while and could not find any suitable rear ends in my area and settled for an 8" rear out of a '66 Fairlane. It has the exact spring perch measurement of 42" but it's overall width is 58", slightly wider, but I don't think enough to cause me any problems.

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

The Ford Mustangs in the early years were based on the Falcon planform so they should near be the same between V8 powered vehicles with 5 bolt lug pattern. No one ever wanted the four bolt lug pattern on the 6 banger Falcons or Mustangs.

Re: 8 inch rearend in a shoebox

I used 70s maverick rear in my 51 shoebox. relocated spring perchs to get a equal spacing between fender and axel ,if you don't you can't get driver side tire off if car is lower, with out a bumper jack. Harold central coast Ca.
