Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist Just in time for Christmas.
Was just doing my standard local search for anything A and this popped up. Thought some people might be interested in a new toy for the holidays. 2 door phaeton in Long Island |
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist A friend was telling me about one here in NE Pa. They're supposed to be as rare as hen's teeth. I don't know! But this one is outrageously priced also. I know what I can do, I can do without!

Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist My intuitions says the car is probably priced more than twice what it should be worth assuming the body is in very very good condition and all the unique parts are there.
Knowing what it takes to get a car to finished condition with a properly restored chassis, but not JS correct. |
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist Just an engine remove, rebuild and install can set you back more than $5000 nowadays. In my opinion this is a good one to pass on.

Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist Yeah, this is priced WAY too high.

Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist Do my eyes deceive me or is that jack holding up the roof of the building its in?
|
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist I saw that too,but I think it is in an enclosed trailer.I don't think they would have strapped the car down in a building.(that's what tipped me off)For us in the northeast it is a common practice to prop the roof up before it snows, you HAVE to keep the snow off those trailers. If you wait until the storm is over to shovel it off,you will be lucky if you just have a big belly in the roof, with the sides tilted in.Throw a couple of posts in beforehand and you are good.

Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist I am not sure I would prop the roof up with a jack rigged up in the car that way. Maybe little risk of damage to the car, but why risk it?
|
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist It is a 1930
Maybe they are straightening the frame :-) You are buying a rare body style and I think asking price is accordingly. |
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist A very nice Tudor phaeton sold at Hershey for $55K last fall.
|
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist The Washington Blue Deluxe Phaeton in Hershey sold for $50K. It was a car that has won everything there is, and had only a few hundred miles on the clock since. Buy that Phaeton on Craigslist for $20K and drop it off at a reputable restoration shop, tell 'em you aim for a show career, and see how far the remaining $30K will get you.
I see this car at about $8K, and only because it's a Deluxe Phaeton. It's certainly a good, unmolested and largely original car, so that's great, but for $20k it would have to be a fine running and driving car without issues, just needing cosmetics and some TLC. |
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist Last one of these on ebay in non running condition was discussed here a little over a year ago.
Sold for 20k. You will never find one of these for 8k. A 4 door phaeton goes for more then 8k and they are plentiful in comparison. On that note, will take all I can get at 8k sight unseen.....................................whos game? |
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist I can see somebody stepping up and buying it.It can't be compared to what other A's are bringing,it's in a class all by itself.Regular A prices just don't apply.Somebody has to want one,and there just are not enough out there to make it a buyers market. It looks like an uncompleted 70's restoration to me.It would have to be looked at,but if the sheet metal and wood is as good as it looks I think somebody will buy it.

Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist Try finding a 180a.......
You would be less "up-side-down" than in a coupe or tudor that you pay $5-10k for and restore. The resto costs are "close" to the same no matter what. Put $30k into each resto and a Tudor is worth, best $18k? So you lose $17k plus purchase price. Do the 180a and its worth $50k and break even? Just some shoot from the hip numbers but think about it. And are we all thinking we need to make a profit on these projects? Sure, you don't want to take a bath financially but it is a hobby. Except for Tiger and a few do you make money playing golf? Travel? If closer, I would be a player on that car!! For sure and would pay close to that depending on inspection. As noted above sheet metal and wood are big factors. Have to put eyes on it. |

Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist Going back to the snow on the roof comments. He has the jack on the back of the car? Why the world would you do that?

Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist Well like the old saying -- you can't take it with you----I'm taking Travellers Checks with me just in case.
Will be interesting to see what this car actually goes for. Merry Christmas and HNY |
Re: Two Door Phaeton on Craigslist To me, that looks like the inside of an enclosed trailer instead of a garage.
While some do not see the asking price realistic, my experience says it will likely bring within 10% of the asking price. Like Bill elluded to above, this bodystyle will give you the best bang for your buck when the costs are factored in. I have honestly thought about reproducing this style body for resale. The only thing hindering me is appropriating the time to do them. |
