Under hood Insulation I assume my 59 Galaxie had insulation under the hood at one time. Does it need to be replaced? If so with what? I'm not making a "show car" just a driver so I really don't care about the appearance.

Re: Under hood Insulation Our '60 Fairlane doesn't show signs of any insulation. Was some in the trunk lid but was mostly gone. removed remaining and replaced it with undercoat to appear correct. problem is the undercoat is so heavy lid won't stay up!!

Re: Under hood Insulation Thanks for your answer. I was looking at some discussions online and it seems to be some for and some think it isn't necessary. I think I'll just repaint it and move on.

Re: Under hood Insulation My '55 originally had insulation under the hood over the exhaust manifolds. The person who painted the car before I got it didn't replace it. It has been several years and there is no damage to the paint under the hood.

Re: Under hood Insulation My main concern was the heat. I bought a qt. of high heat black paint just in case. I'll just spray several coats of that. Thanks for your reply.

Re: Under hood Insulation 1 Attachment(s)
The 19-49 Ford factory parts manual does not show insulation used in the hood, only a a extrusion that is installed on the cowl to seal the hood to the cowl.

Re: Under hood Insulation Apparently heat is not issue. I saw it mentioned once that it could also be for noise reduction which I don't care about.

Re: Under hood Insulation Speaking of this stuff...what is the best adhesive to use to keep under hood insulation attached to the surface? I used the tackiest stickiest spray-on adhesive I could find, but the insulation eventually came off, presumably from the high temps. I used a couple lesser spray-on adhesives before then which didn't work well at all, even in the short term. This was on my Thunderbird.

Re: Under hood Insulation Look at this - https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40069451/
Make sure the under hood panel skin is clean (maybe wipe down with prep-sol) and masking tape the pad(s) to the underside of the hood to let the adhesive fully set. Leave hood opened maybe to allow adhesive to fully set before applying weight (hood closed). This is a 55/57 BIRD? |

Re: Under hood Insulation Thanks for the link, Kultulz, and the masking tape tip. I'll try that 3M product. My T-Bird is a '65.
As far as the trunk goes, my '61 Mercury trunk has the torsion bar setup, but I don't know about the '60 Fords or '60 Mercuries. |
