351 water pump bolt torque

Have had gasket trouble before and am trying to be fussy on this reinstall. I cant find torque specs for this water pump - does 20 sound right?

Do what my brother-n-law does... use a breaker bar in it until the bolt head snaps off, then back off a touch...:D

Try this... not sure what size/grade bolts you have. Probably going to be about 15 lb-ft.

Good luck, Roger

That is a handy chart - I printed it off to hang in the shop. But torque specs are based on more than the grade and size of bolt right ??

Grade and size of bolt are of primary importance. After that, lubrication, thread pitch, class of fit, and specific material, etc.,

correct to both of you. Torque is pretty much based on the size and grade of the bolt. The torque reading to bring the fastener to its strongest hold is also influenced by lubrication. It takes less torque (reading on the torque wrench) to bring a clean lubed fastener to full strength than a dry (maybe dirty?) fastener.

This is a great chart.

I just put my water pump on my 302 and the correct torque on all 302 and 351 and many more is 15 to 22ft torque lbs.

Also the bolt size is 5/16 x 8 standard with a 1/2" head

Yeah 15 to 22 is fine. Keep in mind you are going into an aluminum cover assembly, torque specs per bolt size and all of that go out the window. !5 is better, I don't even torque these, never have and never leaked. I use the justabouta method. Just about a same force as applied to taking off a beer bottle cap. More than that will result in tears or purchasing the cover I have in my parts stash.
