Distributor & Points

I recently restored, with lots of help from friends a late 1931 Ford Model A. The problem I have is with points.

After the car has run for 15 to 20 miles the points become burnt and the car will not run. I have had new points installed 2 to 3 times by a fellow associate who is very knowledgeable on the Model A and he can not figure out what the issue may be with the points constantly burning out.

After 15-20 miles the points become burnt and the car begins to backfire and will not run. After letting the car sit for 10 - 15 minutes the car will start but there is a large amount of back firing and the idling is of course very rough.

Any thoughts or information would greatly be appreciated. My direct email is [email protected]

Thank you very much for reading and any information.

Although you included your email I am posting the answer. If I am wrong someone will correct it. Others will benefit from the information and people may have additional thoughts after reading my post. I assume your car is completely stock since you didn't say otherwise. If I remember correctly, burnt points are a sign of a failing condenser. You should keep a spare condenser under the seat, if you don't buy one. Try changing the condenser and see if that solves the problem. Be sure to buy the best quality condenser (highest price). A&L and Bratton's have the high quality condensers.

Yes it was converted to 12 volts. The problem this far according to an associate is the cam is scoring almost immediately.

You should be asking in the Model A section, this section is for questions to the editors.
What do you mean by the "cam is scoring"? Unless the rub block is gone this should not happen.
