How do you adjust timing using a crab dist.
 

I would like to bump the timing up 4 degrees. Do you have to remove the dist. To get the plate to move? Can it be moved with the dist on the car?
Also, what should the max advance be and at what rpm? THANKS

Working from memory here so don't be surprised if someone corrects this post. The vacume advance limits have to be set on a bench with a machine to spin the distributor and check advance limits. These machines are great for setting dwell as well on these distributors. If you haven't had it off it's good to take the plunger out and check the old leather packing as it either wears out, gets hard and sticks or gums up. It's not difficult that way but without it you will have to take it off change it put it back on check it and if it's wrong, take it off again and so on and so on and so forth. Initial advance is easier, loosen bolts rotate about 1/8 inch clockwise to advance and check it. May take a few tries but ain't too much trouble. DON'T TRY IT WITH ENGINE RUNNING.

That is the problem. It sure does not want to slide. I guess I will pull it off, move it, and put back on. Seems like a silly way to do it.

Loosen the screw and tap it gently to get it to move.

Like the others have said , loosen bolt and tap adjustment ....lightly...
