Origin of "Tin Lizzie/Lizzy"? Just where and when and who coined the Ford Model T the "Tin Lizzie/Lizzy"?
Have always wondered about that? Thanks "T" guys! Pluck |
Re: Origin of "Tin Lizzie/Lizzy"? Steve, One story is from Noel Bullock's 1922 Pikes Peak race win. http.//edgeoftheplanetadventures.blogspot.com/2010/12/tin-lizzie.htm Another story was Ford's daughter was Elizabeth(Lizzie) and the car was made of tin. Don't for fact but either sounds good. Philip

Re: Origin of "Tin Lizzie/Lizzy"? I thought it was Victoria, so I looked it up to be sure. Henry and Clara had
only one child,...Edsel. |
Re: Origin of "Tin Lizzie/Lizzy"? Very common at the turn of the century that the more well-to-do persons had hired help in the household. Those helpers, usually young women were known as "Lizzies" or the shortened common name of Elizabeth.
As only the well-off could afford the new fangled automobiles of the time, ......when Henry Ford brought out his low-cost popular car for the masses, a car that would do farm work, and city errands, or tours in the country, it only became apparent that such a car as the Model T was a 'helper' for the household. Therefore the moniker "Tin Lizzie" was born.......a 'robotic' like family helper.... |
Re: Origin of "Tin Lizzie/Lizzy"? Wow, never know that! Great piece of info.

Re: Origin of "Tin Lizzie/Lizzy"? Wasn't there a song in the 20's about the Tin Lizzie?

Re: Origin of "Tin Lizzie/Lizzy"? Yes. 1928 "Henry made a Lady out of Lizzie" and also in 1928 "Poor Lizzie" (about the replacing the Model T with the Model A)
CAPS sells a CD of these 1920's automobile songs for only $10 http://www.antiquephono.org/OnlineStore.html |
