How rare and how many 29 style fuel tanks had the 30-31 cap an why ?

Not that rare since Ford used the 1929 Body Style Truck until May of 1930.

I'm not aware of the actual start time of the new filler neck, but have supposed that this might have been done after October 1929 when Ford "anticipated" the new body style and started conversion of frame/chassis by lowering the pads for mounting the radiator (A filler piece was used for October through December cars using the old body style/old radiator.)

IIRC (I would have to look back and confirm the engine numbers) I disassembled for parts a basket-case AA with the new style filler/old style tank and believe it was a November truck. But truck numbering is a little "flaky" compared to the car line with a 90 day leeway between engine number and actual production.

This would be a truck convention only. I'm not aware that ANY passenger cars in the 29 body style were produced with the new filler neck.

But stranger things have been observed...

Only production Early 1930 Commercial A's and AA's would have used the '29 tank with the Tab style Gas Cap. Since early Pick-Ups and the rest used the '29 Cab until they changed production to the '30 cab, there were also other early '30 commercial body styles that used that tabbed cap.

Production records should show an approximate number of vehicles produced, not sure how they kept track of '30 production regarding the change.
