It was reported in a bulleton published by the Gulf Coast Early V8 Club that George passed away Jan. 14th, all I know. If you ever met George you never forgot the experience, to say the least.

I do know that he had a fall over a year ago. I haven't sen a post from him for a long time which was unusual for him...Bill

He was an interesting guy; I think he might have invented or designed the wire feed welders among other things. Sorry to hear this.

I visited George Mitchell and Skip Haney in Punta Gorda many times on various trips to Florida, and I always enjoyed spending time there with both of them.

Randy, thanks for finding the obituary and posting the link. Knew he was involved in spool fed welding equipment and often posted here on his solutions to flathead vapor lock, and he was certainly a supporter of Skip Haney and Skip's water pump designs. His other interests were amazing as well. Part of the year...spring and summer....he had a place in Chester County PA. Rest in Peace, GM!!

Very impressive, a lot of achievements in his lifetime. He was a valued member of this forum and I feel honoured to have been able to call on his expertise.

I have visited George and Skip in Punta Gorda on a couple of occasions. Very interesting man (men). Rest in peace GM!

Agree 100%. Just the other day I thought how GM hasn't posted in a while. Sadly, now I know why.

George was a very good friend and I stayed at his Campground behind his Old Gas Station when I was in Florida. I would take my 39 Conv. down there to tour with George. He would drive my 39 and I would drive his. Then we would tell what the difference was. There was nothing that George could do if he set his mind to do. One of the sharpest person I knew of. Skip and George were always together when I was there. Very humble man. He always had time for me. We always click together when I was there. I will miss him. I could go on and on about George. Every Sunday we and all his friends would meet at the Yaught Club for breakfast. George would laugh and say I don't even own a boat. The meal was on George. They don't come any better than George. I will never forget him. God Bless George and his family.

As far as I know, I don't think it ever "worked out" as such. Back many moons ago when George posted that picture, I queried along the same lines and I vaguely remember him saying something like "we threw the parts together just to see if it could be done, more for 'SHOCK VALUE' than for anything else".

I can relate, as I once threw a mocked-up flathead into a restored mid-year Corvette roller chassis for the same reasons. I don't remember taking pictures.

George was a nice guy, he took my wife and I touring around Sarasota in his 39 then offered it to us to continue our trip up to Georgia in it,
He was a real gentleman

In seeing his picture, I just may have met George once long ago. If it was him, he had his '39 at a swap meet somewhere back East or Midwest? Engine idling quietly, very hot day, demonstrating Skip's water pumps. I remember thinking there must be some trick...

I had the privilege of meeting him on a few occasions and have great memories of visiting his museum in Punta Gorda. Very nice and knowledgeable fellow. RIP sir.

Hi Everyone. I can't find it but my first thread started here on the 'Barn ages ago was responded to by GM and he roasted me. It was a situation that was my fault but not the way he was figuring. We crossed paths on the show field at Hershey a decade ago where he obliged a chat. An impressive fella.

I've known George for thirty years; he hosted the Cigar City Flatheads on more than a few occasions when we cruised down to Punta Gorda during our "Barner's Bash" events. He was always very generous with his time and knowledge of Flatheads. I will miss him.

This picture shows John Mason sitting in George Mitchell's 39 convertible with a hose connected to the tailpipe and being held up to John's ear so he could hear the sweet sound of a well tuned flathead!
When Bill took the picture, George said "Now I don't want to see that picture on Ford Barn!"

I met George at the national meet in Hiawasee in 06, he advised me a lot on overheating issues!

First met George in person on a Glidden tour about 25 years ago. We had been communicating a couple years before that. George and Ann rode with my wife and I for 5 days of tour in our 35 phaeton. What a bond 2 families develop after that much conversation. I learned so much. Wish I could remember it all. Put us up in fla. A few times. Also visited in PA. George blew a head gasket on his 33 phaeton and didn't feel like a teardown in campground. Will miss him greatly . Don

I read many comments about Skip also. He worked for my parents close to 40 years. He is family to us. He lives just down the road and still rebuilds the coils and water pumps using Dad’s idea’s and solution to these old problems. I stop to see him often in his shop at his house. If anyone needs Skips contact info i will be happy to post it. Skip still helps me with any problems i have with my cars. This past weekend it was our 1948 Willys. He had it running great in 45 minutes lol.
I restored Dad’s first car with him in 1982. A 1929 roadster. I picked the paint color. Ran over the doors too when he left them on the driveway…another story.
I know Dad was a friend to all of you so i’m sorry for you loss too. Thanks for being Dad’s friends !!!! Scott
