Question on replacement of the crossmember:

I have a 29 AA truck with a nasty crack in the crossmember where the front car spring would sit.

The metal in the crossmember where the front mount would go is badly pitted but not rotted thru and feels solid. I am still in the tear down phase of the rebuild so i have no engine or anything at all in the way. The front engine mount hole seems like its the right size but i am unsure.

I dont believe the car/AA crossmembers are the same. Also it looks like their spotwelded along with riveted on the rails. Are the cars spotwelded on?

I am open to any and all suggestions as to what to do....:(

At certain road speeds/rpms an annoying rattle occurs inside the steering column. After much investigation, I suspect that the wire inside the horn rod is brittle with age (not flexible) and it rattles inside the horn rod.

Has anyone replace the wire inside the horn rod? It appears that the rubber/plastic insulating bushings at the top and bottom of the rod will be one of the biggest challenges.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Generator quit working so removed it to the bench. All brushes worn down so that the brush holders were rubbing on the armature. No new brushes available on Saturday, so elongated the brush holes, shimmed the top of the brushes with tape, reinstalled generator and it now charges fine. For fun I connected a voltmeter to generator post on generator side of the cut out. At idle it read seven volts. wheneverer I reved up the motor the voltmeter would read zero. Slow down to idle and voltmeter would jump back up to seven volts. Repeated it several times. Clamped voltmeter lead under generator post nut to ensure good connection and bolted other lead to clean ground. Repeated several times again and same result. Drove a hundred miles Sunday and generator was charging strong. Why the voltage drop to zero at speeds above idle? I can't figure it out!

Putting together '36 221--pistons are aluminun 3 ring, .040 over. They have one expansion slot, 90 degrees to the pin, wrist pins not offset. Only marking on top is a small Ford script stamped above one pin hole. Does the Ford script go to the front, which would mean four pistons would have the expansion slot on the bottom, and four would have it on the top, ...or is the expansion slot the determining factor? And, if so, does it do top or bottom? Info/opinions appreciated. Rod

Hi guys
I have a 276? ci flathead and was wondering about the best carb choice. It is a '40 Merc block .60 over with a 4 1/8 stroked crank. 400jr cam and Tattersfield 2x2 intake. It is going into my 32. I haven't decided on heads yet either.
I have 2 97's (one is rebuilt and the other is yet to be done.)
I only have one rebuilt 48 so far.
Any advice from the crowd? Are the 48's too much carb? And what heads do you prefer. It is a factory relieved block.

Well, we are HOME. We left Sunday morning at 6 AM from Battle Creek, MI after attending the museum opening. We did 1250 miles in two days. We had a few set backs yesterday, but still managed to get it done. I'm very fortunate to be writing this, as we were driving through Moore, Oklahoma when the F-4 Tornado touched down, on the opposite side of town. Needless to say, our model a got tested to see exactly how fast it would go.... and I don't ever want to have to test it again.
Stats:
